The part of that movie that bugs me is when the German officer makes the soldiers execute the civilians. They all have k98's and there is one guy who doesnt want to shoot the civilians because he knows one of them (some kid). They all load their mausers and get the order to fire and they do. The officer then goes up the guy who was reluctant to shoot and watches him open the bolt of his gun and the shell flies out. I dont understand what the officer was trying to do, even if he had not fired the shell would still fly out :confused: it makes no sense...

I guess that he was checking to see if it was a fired or unfired case!
 
point was the german officer was enforcing discipline ..............orders were orders if the german soldier, recently released from the penal unit...( for allegedly being insubordinate).....didnt shoot........that is eject an unused round, he would have been shot in turn.
in the book ENEMY AT THE GATE a german soldier tells how he made it into stalingrad near the end, only to be faced with a rifle inspection an 24 hrs extra guard post fer having a dirty/rusty rifle after running an fighting /shooting the better part of 2 days...........in hopes to survive in stalingrad .
enemy at the gates was good but CROSS OF IRON an oldy, or STALINGRAD, or the recent release downfall ( hitlers final month) are much better flicks .
