Mosin Nagent project - Scope mountings?

I like the look of the Dragonov scopes reticle, and as such, I would like one to use on a rifle. Since the PSO-1 (And their reproductions) are calibrated for the 7.62 Russian, I figure a rifle in that caliber is in order.

The Tokerev does not look easy, and the AKs are illegal. The vz858 and the SKS are the wrong cartridge, so that leaves the bolt-action mosin! (Or a custom rifle, but I'm not made of money)

I am curious though on what I can do to mount it. The belarussian seller on eBay sells a neat little kit to mount on the receiver, but I'm not sure how or where that mounts, besides, I would prefer to get something a little closer, maybe even make it myself...

how do the original sniper mounts for the mosin work?

finally, which mosin would be best suited for a scope? the M91 or the M44? I would probably chop the bayonet off the m44 if I used that.

Well for your last question, the M91 would definitely be best suited. Also, I wouldn't go chopping off any bayonets off your M44s as I'm pretty sure that the M44s were sighted in with bayonet extended and shoot off to the side without the bayonet out.

I did mount a scope on my M44, without any permanent modification (aka Terminal Bubba). A scope mount replaces the rear sight leaf, and a long relief scope goes on it. Mine holds zero.

When I'll be done shooting with the scope on that rifle, it can safely be returned to its original state.

I highly discourage the bubba-fication of another milsurp

:nest: I knew this comment would show up.

I was only trying to say I would prefer a mosin without a bayonet. I'm not planning to alter the stock (Though a new, more ergonomic one would be nice), chop it up or screw around with it other than wanting to mount a PSO-1 scope on it and alter the bolt handle to work with it.

People are converting mosins into snipers, right? I just want to do the same, with a "Newer" scope

You could acquire a M38, they come without a bayo - Tradex has some form $150... Hey maybe I should get one myself :)

My M44 came with an attached bayo. I unscrewed it off from its mount, so the mount is still on the barrel but that doesn't bother me.

People do a lot of things to ensure that un-fudged rifles are hard to come by. I think converting to a sniper is equally as wrong. I just would like to see these kinds of posts in the sporting rifles section instead of among people who appreciate the history of these rifles and would not dare to ruin them with holes.

I agree; and, since there are already quite a few pre-drilled milsurps (Enfields, Mosins etc), it shouldn't be too hard to find a rifle on which half the wanted modifications have already been made (and paid for) by someone else. I mean, you can buy a $100 sporterized LE No1 Mk3, take it to a gunsmith and pay him $75 to drill holes. So you paid $175 and end up with a rifle worth $50. Or, buy a already-drilled $50 Lee Enfield, and spend money towards your goal; seems like the second scenario is less expensive, right?

Here's what you do:
1) Go to TradeEx, they have a link at the top of the page. Last time I was on there, there was a mosin barreled action. Purchase it and locate a spare stock, handgaurd and barrel bands through the EE, marstar, TradeEx, etc
2) Go to KalinkaOpticsdotcom. They have a large selection of russo-soviet optics as well as a side rail that will allow you to mount them to a Nagant reciever

This would give you an already mucked about rifle that would be functional, and not destroying anything that hasn't been already. There are also synthetic stocks available as well, if you really want them.

There's a company right here in Canada that sells the full line of modern Russian scopes suitable for that conversion.

ht tp://www.eastwave.ca/

(remove space between ht and tp)

There is also someone that makes a good, heavy rail to slide the scope into.

I agree, best not to butcher a rifle that hasn't already got extra holes drilled in it. Find one that has.

Hey - I recognize your avatar... it's been years since I've seen that!

Anyways, back on topic. Not only would a 91/30 be less work to deal with than an m44 or m38, it is a better candidate for scoping anyways. Carbines just aren't built for the longest ranges afforded to you by having a scope.

Thing is about your plan is that putting a scope on it by drilling the reciever is screwing it up. Most people won't even go so far as to put a reproduction PU scope from the same era on, so mounting a random scope from 50 years later is a big no-no.

I think what you'll find is that if you do it, you'll end up with an expensive bubba job. No matter how little you spend (aka $100 for a cheap rifle, $180 for a POSP scope and mount, and do all your own gunsmithing and bolt modification), you'll only have a $150-$200 gun at best. Also, if you look around you'll probably find pics of the 91/30 with POSP mounts on it..... it doesn't look that good.... :puke:

That and the POSP mount sits way too high on the gun for comfort. This is mainly because the POSP mount is meant for large flatsided recievers where the scope base plate is mounted below the level of the barrel. On the 91/30 the base plate has to be mounted to the side of the reciever, elevating it about an inch above where it's comfortable to shoot from.

I dunno, why not get a PU scope and use that? That way you have a very rugged, very useful, and historically accurate scope that adds to the value of the gun instead of subtracting?

That is a very good point! I never thought of that. Since I have a scoped Mk.3 enfield with too high rings, so I know I don't want any more high scopes.

That suggestion of the "proper" scope on it makes sense now, and I think I'll do that.

I'm a lefty and the POSP scopes don't like leftys, and iirc they are not on the centerline of the bore either *as well as sky high as someone already mentioned - someone in the sks forum showed what one looks like mounted on an SKS, it looks like. :puke:

I've been wondering about the left of center thing too - I would have though they would produce an ultra thin profile scope base, or an over wide scope mount so that it would naturally sit right of center, and could then be shimmed back, rather than what seems stock now which is it just sitting too far left.

It would be a pretty simple thing to do too...
