Ok so here is what I did, I stripped my 1944 Izzy ex-sniper M91/30 with Circa soft strip and didn't do any sanding to preserve the markings on the wood. Then finishing it of with 4 coats of Bullseye amber shellac. The reason I did this was because all of the shellac was chipping off. Did I ruin the gun???I think it looks alot better but I wish it was a bit darker, more aged looking. I'll post some pics soon. Let me know what your opinons are. :sniper:
 
Shellac is what was used originally (in theory)... You didn't remove anything that is irreplaceable... You didn't do anything that can't be reversed... and these rifles aren't the most precious museum pieces... imho can't wait to see the pics!

If you want to see something butt ugly you should see my M-44's. The guy I got them from didn't do any stripping at all; he just gave them two or three coats of varnish. I almost had to turn my back when I saw them.:eek:
 
Can sombody help posting pics.............finally got them taken and had to upload them to photobucket because i can't upload from my computer onto this site. Use photobucket's "Direct Link", highlight and copy that link, then use the insert image icon (looks like a gray mountain on a yellow background) as found on this board, found just above this text box in the quick reply area, and insert the link when prompted. Should result in something like this, but without the spaces.

Well here it is........don't know why the bolt looks so yellow.
 
I think it looks alright. Probably nobody will know it's not just a refurb shellac job.

For future reference, the best shellac to use is Garnet, not Amber. Shellac.net sells garnet flake. You dissolve it yourself in alcohol. Looks just like ww2 wartime shellac when dried.
 
I think it looks really nice! You did a good job!

I wonder if that garnet shellac gives it the reddish tinge I see on so many Russian firearm stocks?
