i'm particularly intersted in comparing the yugo m48a and the 91/30 mosin. thinking of building a poor man's sniper rifle.

Compare them and ..... buy them both :D :D :D

IMHO, The Mauser is the more technically advanced rifle. The Mosin is more affordable (less expensive).

Both will work just fine for your intended purpose.

If you can get a good MN, like a Finnish 28/30 or 39, with the big heavy barrels then you will ususally be well ahead of any old milsurp mauser and not have to look at rebarreling etc.
Thier is good brass out there for MNs, Norma, Sako and Lapua still all have it. The quaility of a good Finn vs pretty much every other MN maker is night and day pretty much.
That said scoping both can get costly.

I think the Mauser approach might be a little more expensive than buying a 91/30 Mosin and a period PU scope, but I'm not sure.....

Since I haven't been able to find a decently priced German K98k Mauser sniper, I also chose the "poor man's sniper" route, as you put it. Here's some repeated information, that I had posted in another thread on the subject of Yugo M48A's...........

I got the scope and parts through Kebco LLC, Silver Spring, MD, USA (click here)http://www.kebcollc.com/. Ken was very helpful and using items (rings and scope) bought from him, plus a standard M48A in excellent condition acquired separately, I managed to get my own "kit" project version of this pseudo Yugo sniper completed. Since I have absolutely "zero" mechanical aptitude, on claven2's recommendation, I then had Jason at Gunco in Ottawa do the mounting work. He was excellent and I've had no problems with mount loosening or improper installation issues.

The nice thing about doing a project like this, is the much lower cost to build-up an 8mm Mauser sniper rifle, relative to the huge expense involved with buying or building up the WWII German k98 sniper rifles. It puts ownership of a generally 40's/50's historical period sniper rifle within the financial reach of a lot more shooters.

yeah, i wasn't really gonna go the zrak route, too much $$, was just gonna throw on an old weaver 4x. do you need pretty tall mounts to get a scope on the rifle due to the handguard or the angle of the bolt? a finnish mosin would be neat.

im currently doing a poor mans rifle idea. i chose a nagant 91/30 .
but a mauser is more simple , less expensive scope mount, , that is if you want a ww2 look .
ever consider a k98 converted by isreal to 7.62mm fer the project??

thers a site on this subject on internet = called michigan militia.com ( i dont agree with there views/ politics but found the gun / info interestin )
check it out a basic discussion on the idea.

Yup, a Weaver Marksman 4x Scope ...... that's what ~Angel~ uses on her No.4(T)'s that didn't come with their own matched No.32 scope.

Another option might be to get a good No.4 Enfield and then pick up the pads and cheekpiece repro sets they're advertising on eBay. Add to it the Enfield No.4(T) repro scope mount from Sarco and you've got yourself a "poor man's" No.4(T) sniper rifle. :D

mauser looks like the way to go, think thats what i'll do. here the m48 has nice open sights to. i like fine sights as on the 1858 and i've heard they're somewhat similar.

I tend to agree - if the choice is between a Swede and a Yugo M48A, I think I'd get a like-new Swede. They are better fit and finished with pre-WW1 craftsmanship. The M48 series are nice rifles, but not as much care went into their assembly.

Of course, in a perfect world, I'g go for a German made pre-ww1 or circa 1935 98 Mauser of come type... like a Brazillian 35 or 08 or an Argentine 09. JHMO.

How about Swede Mauser vs. Finn M/39?? These seem to be two of the more popular 'accurate' milsurps out there these days. I'd be interested to see which rifle the forum prefers.

My 2 cents
I never found a mosin that cycles ammunition to my liking (I've owned about 6 of them).

Mausers have never let me down.
