mosin or mauser?

if i throw a set of weaver mounts on, do i have to modify the bolt? or should i go with a scout mount?

Are you serious? You want to take a swede mauser, worth about $300 and drill and tap it and turn it into a $100 sporter?

Just go to the EE section and buy a hunting rifle. You can get a brand new savage for about 500 bucks, with an accutrigger. If you want a sniper, then buy one:mad:

so what if it's a yugo one! lots of people said the same thing about enfields and mausers about 10 years ago. Don't #### up a milsurp, they don't make em anymore! There are plenty out there that have already been bubba'd, and like deano says, for the $$ you might as well buy a commercial gun.

If you're after an altered military gun, you can't go wrong with a .303 Enfield that has been scoped(please don't do this to one that is still original), they can be had at gunshows from $50...

Okay newbie

You started off asking about M48a Mausers versus Mosin Nagant for a "poor man's sniper project". The consensus seemed to be that Mausers were the way to go, then Monty suggested that Swede mausers, in particular, were better...

I love my Mosin, but for accuracy you can't beat a Mauser. A 6.5x55 Swede Mauser!

You seemed to think that was a good idea, as you replied
where can one find a "like new" swede? i've heard they're excellent

Further, you went on to inquire
i was wondering if any stores had found a batch, like marstars yugos.

You never let on in any of your further posts, that you were NOT still looking at Swedish Mausers, so your statement instructing me to read the thread is invalid. I did. Did you?

Secondly, the real point here is that you are not looking at a sniper rifle, it would appear that you are looking at what we would call a bubba project. A Weaver mount will require drilling and tapping and usually some bolt bending. That is what we call a bubba, not a sniper or a sniper clone.

If all you want is a scope on a milsurp, then there's plenty around for sale, already done for you. If you want to make an original "reproduction" or "clone", then ask around for suitable parts. But don't post on a milsurp collectors board asking for help on a bubba project and expect plenty of help and big smiles. It would be like going to a Ford Mustand collectors board bragging about your nice Chevy Camaro. It's your right, your car and you can do what you want, just kinda rude, imho.

M48A would be one good choice......moreover, you could go for a S&K scout mount (the scope will cost you more than the rifle unless you get a good deal on used)......there won't be a need for alterations as the only thing required would be the removal of the rear sight (this is not permanent) and you would have the option to revert the rifle to it's original military configuration whenever you wish to.

Here's a link if you haven't already come across that:

That is a very good suggestion. Lets you keep your rifle original, yet all of the functionality of a telescopic sight. Good luck.
