I ended up using the 1/4 inch 28 thread set screws.
If you have the same problems, I'd highly recommend them! The tap fits perfectly, the threads lock in solidly and you can still do the basic adjustments easily. Mine had hex heads on the set screws, but since I don't carry a hex head with me I shaved them down and cut slots instead. Now for some bush testing
