Mosin PU Sniper

Nothing to apologize for dimon! That is what the thread is all about after all.

Presumably your Izhevsk's have the original font for the scope number on the left side of the barrel? And then the scope that actually matches the original font?

That I have never seen yet.

Any of the ex snipers that have been sold have the original font of course, most X'd out, but they never have a scope. And any resnipered one will have a repro or non matching scope of course.

Then we have the Molots and Tula refurbs...I've had both. Quite different but both had a new matching scope number stamped in, in a different and smaller font. Real, who knows? Maybe. Certain aspects of the refurbs makes me think they may well be. One of them is how well they shoot, people getting amazing groups with them etc. And, I've noted that the scope mounts are properly centered, unlike the Ukranian repros.

I've had a bunch of Mosins of various backgrounds, but sadly have never been able to fall in love with them. I find the actions awkward and clunky vs the Enfields I love. That's not to say they aren't an excellent rifle, I know they are.

I love these old Mosins and see them as graceful and reliable rifles with lots of history.
This particular rifle stamped with original matching font throughout including the scope number. Scope's number on barrel shank matches rifle's serial font and applied over the blueing. As it was noted before, the serial numbers on Mosins were applied after final acceptance of the whole rifle by the Military Rep. In my case the rifle's serial number on barrel shank, butt plate, bottom of the mag and scope's serial number are applied over the blueing with same type and size font. Also, the plant's logo and some, but not all midstage tech. stamps are blued over. I agree with my russian counterparts that sometimes it is hard to determine whether the number was stamped over the blueing or not, but after gentle washing of old dirt and grime I could clearly see that these numbers were applied over the blueing for sure. Also, there are no numbers stamped on the scope mount except Izhevsk triangle.
Also, the etched serial number on the scope is not blued over, I can clearly see the bare metal(scope is Yoshkar Ola made in 1944)

About 2 years ago I saw Izhevsk MN sniper at LGS for $500. Numbers were matching on scope and barrel shank and rifle numbers were matching too. Mount was not serialized. Rifle had original light bluing. I don't fancy 91/30 at all to say the least, but I should not have passed this deal as it looked like the rifle was in the condition very close to original one. Now I don't mind having 91/30 sniper, but I don't want to have force-matched reworks.
P.S. Latest Molot imports to US are not original reworked snipers. I don't know if we have those new imports in Canada.

MOLOT debate

I've been reading a lot on the Molot pu sniper lately. Seems like quite the debate. I'm not one side or the other and havn't purchased one either. I did have the chance to quickly examine one, but I'm by no means a mosin nagant expert. Here is a good link concerning Molot and import markings. Seems like the company has not really said one way or the other if they are made from spares, found refurbished as is, or frankensteined/bubba'd . Either way buyer beware. here's the link

One of the site advertisers has PUs in stock (Bulls Eye - click on the banner).

I looked a a couple of theirs a few months ago (probably not the same as the ones now). They are genuine sniper rifles with miss matched scopes and electro-pencil serial numbers on the mount. Not 100% sure about the stocks - some pictures I have seen on other sites make me think that some of these rifles are sitting in modified non-sniper stocks.

They are configured for importation into the US; the serial number is duplicated on the receiver. They aren't as nice as the earlier (2012) imports because they have a large "Made in Russia" laser etch on the right side of the receiver compared to the much smaller etch just in front of the rear sight.

There are quite a few of these around in southern Ontario at the moment. There we about half a dozen in boxes at the last Woodstock gun show. The going rate is $750 + tax.

Real question is do they shoot like the real snipers? Yes they do but anyone who really wants to get a true 1.5 or less MOA Mosin is in for plenty of effort and expense. They won't shoot 1.5 with milsurp ammunition and, at least in my experience, they won't do it with Hornady 0.3105 FMJ projectiles either. Sierra 174 gn FMJBT are the best but you can't find any. Lapua D166 (0.310 200 gn FMJ) shoot well but run $54/100 plus tax and shipping. Hornady "Vintage Steel Match" is really good if you can find it and afford it.
