I found this on another board and I'm wondering if this is true.

"By the way, you can easily put a scope on a 91/30. With NO drilling and tapping, NO damage to the rifle, and NO expensive scope mount. It's really simple but I don't know if many people know about. If you look at the rear sight base, there's two pins. If you punch those pins out, you can slide of the rear sight base. Underneath is a 3/8" dovetail rail! Did you know that? Only thing is you have to get a scope with a really long eye relief, around 12", a handgun scope will work perfectly. "

Anyone know anything about this?
 
Yes, its a 'no-gunsmithing' mount that allows you to remove the sight ladder and pin on a scope for a LER type set-up. I have seen many people do it on their 38's and 44's

I don't have one, so can't speak to their effectiveness, but its an appealing idea to me.
 
That's what I liked about it! It gives a person the opportunity to put together a cheap 'scout' rifle. I think there is an article on doing that on mosinnagant.net or one of those sites.

Guys, he's not talking about a scout mount replacing the tang.

The rear sight base is actually slid onto a dovetail machined into the barrel. If you drift out the pins (and remove the base screw if the gun is pre-1941 and still has one), you can remove the sight base and expose the 3/8" dovetail. It even will have two channels milled into it where the set pins go that can be used by some weaver-type rings.

The problem is that SOME base are also soft-soldered on as well. You might need to really heat it up to get it off. Use a brass or aluminum punch. It drifts off toward the front sight.

I would NOT recommend doing this to a collectible gun, but if you have a sporter, it's a viable option.
