Soo got one do u guys check head space before shooting if soo how and loose stock bands anyway to tighten these up?? maybe steam will swell the wood u@ if anyone has done this let me know would appreciate also lookin for ammo i can only get cases at wholsale in mid island area if anyone knows were i can get smaller boxes???as i cant afford tbe 200or so for880rounds and would like to try this one out with the boy first bolt action....cheers

I take it you bought a 91.30 ? I have to admit, I never did like the band design for those rifles, I much rather prefer the earlier screw based design on the M91.
I had a loose upper band on my M91 so I put a metal shim underneath the upper portion where it meets with the hand guard as well as a small piece of brass wire in the gap between the cleaning rod and the lower portion of the band. It won't jump around now when I shoot her and the cleaning rod won't pop out either. Best part is, I can remove these bits easily.
You may wish to try something like this for your Mosin.
For ammo, try looking for MFS. It is steel cased and somewhat dirty to clean up after but is non-corrosive and cheap to shoot. My mosin doesn't like it but WW2 mosins may be more generous with tolerances.

As for headspace and that kind of thing. If it's a refurb fresh out of the grease I'd say headspace won't be an issue. If the bolt matches the reciever it's should also be fine.
But that being said any time I fire a milsurp for the first time I always test fire the rifle from the hip. I chamber one round, hold the gun at my side and fire it. I then check the fired case for signs of pressure and generous headspace.
As for ammo, check some of the CGN sponsors as there may be some that sell surplus ammo in smaller qauntities.

x2. I do this with all my rifles to see how they respond and it helps with reloading.
Most , I'll just lean and turn my head away and fire a test shot.... a couple I've tied a length of fishing line to....

Thx for the info yes it is a 91/30 will look around for ammo more the bolt matches the receiver so ill shoot from the hip and have a good look at the case afterward ...cheersalso does the bayonet juslock on the barrel or just presure fit wen installed u tun it under the sight but wen turned back there doesnt seem to be anything holding it there just pushed on backward if that made any sense

From what I remember from having a 91.30 and bayonet, the bayonet should slide on (you shouldn't need to force it on) then press down to compress the lock spring and rotate to the right (bayonet should be on parallel with the bayonet on its right side.
I suspect millions of those guns were shot in Russia (from 1800s to 1990s) and probably nobody ever checked for the head space... Everything was done in the factory, so unless you are going to put a new barrel in, don't waste your time.
I haven't checked headspace on any of my mosins. As for stock bands I've noticed that all of my Finn mosins have loose stock bands. My guess is that this was intentional on the part of the Finns to keep pressure off of the barrel. They are very accurate and I have no desire to mess with them.
