Mosin Sniper Rifles

They are still waiting for the export permit, assuming that at their speed permit will be ready one year from the day we submitted paper work

Between P&S ($725 + shipping), Durham ($699 shipped), and Bullseye ($699 shipped) there is a lot to chose from.
These are all older refurbs of original snipers?
Equal?
Anyone know who imported them?
I don't know which one to buy.
Any suggestions?

Some appear real but have molot export marks. Was tempted to get one until I saw that unfortunately...

All of the rifles from the new batch are authentic. They were exported by Tulsky from Russia. You're confusing Molot markings with Russian federal export markings which the Molot rifles had. Get one from Jean @ P&S, it's worth the extra to get photos before you buy of a specific rifle and to get their wonderful service. The Molot exports were real WW2 PU snipers from deep storage by the way, confirmed by many serious collectors from the US and Ukraine. There are less than 5 or so non export marked real PU snipers in Canada that I've ever even heard of.

PS you guys should really use the search function I researched the origins and legitimacy of this PU sniper import and posted the details in this very section a few weeks ago.

Few differences and a few example of ex-snipers and repro/clone snipers out there and for the lack of confusion – I am only going to discuss PU Snipers.

1. Un-Touched matching sniper - WWII original, as it came off the battle field. All parts original/matching. M52's would fall into this category. These rifles were selected for their accuracy, had nicer wood to metal fitting, had very smooth bolts/actions, lighter triggers and external surfaces had fine metal polishing vs rough ground surfaces. These are very hard to come by in the Canadian market and are quite expensive when found. Most common are M52’s.

2. Refurb’d WWII sniper - Made from a mix of WWII original and often some post war parts which are forced matched - but the receiver/barrel/scope/mount components are WWII. These refurbs were done in the 50/60's in Soviet arsenals with the purpose of being used as sniper rifles in a war than never happened. As these are forced matched, they will have many of the benefits of an original sniper, but may not have all the attributes of an Un-Touched example. There are a few Generations of these rifles (Gen 1 – No Import/Export markings, Gen2 – Molot markings under the handguard – some have US import markings, Gen3 – External Export markings on the receiver). Can currently be found for $600-750 (PS Militaria and select CT stores).

3. Ex-Sniper Restored or not - Many original WWII snipers were made into standard service rifles during the refurb process. These are often nicer than standard service rifles (smoother actions, metal finish, accuracy, etc.), these may be found in their 'new' service rifle state, or may be used as a base project for a restoration (original or reproduction bent bolt/scope/mount added). This restoration project would be completed recently (probably since 1990 – fall of the Soviet Union) and may have been done in Canada or overseas. Without optics these can be had for as low as $150, if you want optics and a bent bolt add $250-650

4. High Quality Reproduction/Clone - Generally done by a gunsmith or by an arsenal. PS use to carry examples finished in the Ukraine – I think they still have a few. These used better than average high wall service rifles, but they smoothed the actions and added high quality reproduction optics made in the Ukraine. Corwin Arms is doing something similar but they are often selecting ex-sniper rifles as their base product. $580-750

5. Do it yourself Reproduction/Clone - Pick a rifle any rifle (1943 Izzy High Wall is the best), get a mount/scope/bent bolt (original/repro) and do it yourself with a drill press - results are mixed. Cost $400+

The quality of reproduction optics/mounts vary extremely. I would stay with original mounts/optics if at all possible – as they are relatively common and not that expensive ($250-500 for an original mount/scope). I would recommend rifle #1 or #2 depending on your budget.

Does anyone know if there are any unrefurbished authentic PU snipers in Canada?

I know of one. Original WW2 non-refurbished but it has a mismatched bolt. I don't know who owns it now. Older collector sold it maybe 1 year ago for around $1200-1600.

What do we think of the ones offered by Durham Sports and Bulls Eye?
I think Bulls Eyes came from North Sylva. Guy from North Sylva said so over the phone.

Are the Canadian Tire Mosin sniper rifles authentic ? If so where do they get theirs from ? I've looked at a few if them they look correct for the most part except I did not see scope numbers on the rifle anywhere. Any info would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

The local Canadian Tire told me that North Sylva supply their firearms.....not sure how authentic that their Mosin Snipers are....but I did buy two hex Mosins from CT last year that were all number matching ; they were 179 each , and supplied by North Sylva...

So is this going to be a first-come, first-served type of thing once you receive the rifles, or are you selling them beforehand?

I too would love to have one of these, and if you're taking preorders please PM me with the details!

In the last 2 months I have had a good look at 4 of the Canadian tire mosin snipers. Each one I was able to detect residual numbering from a mostly removed scope number on the receiver. Of the 4, 3 of them had original period pu scopes 1 had a later one. All had indications of forced number matching on them. If your looking for a safe queen hold out for something more collectable. If you want to shoot it, and trust me you probably do, pick one up before someone else does. Beware, the stores do not all sell them at the same price. I found one 50 bucks cheaper a couple weeks after I bought mine... Such is life.
