On my 1891/30 at the top of the butt wood on each side there is a splice of another piece of wood about 2" long and 1" tall and about 1/4" into the stock...I don't know how to attach pictures otherwise I would..was this a common thing? It's actually fairly well done.

As far as I know, arsenal stock repairs are quite common on milsurp firearms. I personally really like the nice ones, they add to the "charm".
Don't know how common they are on Mosins, but I've seen lots on Enfields.

Well it's nothing fancy but its my first of what I hope to be many non chopped shootable Milsurps (Got two sporterized Mark III's). Gave it a good cleaning but still got to seperate the wood and get all the gunk out of there. Not sure what to do about the shellac, its pretty flaked off. Would like to strip it and redo it, but not sure what the best thing to use for stripping is and what finish to put on it...what do you guys think? I want it to look nice when I take it to the range but not take away any value ($189 lol). Bayo doesn't match and also doesn't fit but all other #'s do. Thanks.
For stripping worn or half-gone shellac, use methyl hydrate. Then fresh shellac is applied. Flakes of shellac, disolved only when you need to use it, is better in my opinion.
