Hi all..newb here...I love my 18.5" 590A1...functions flawlessly...just wondering if it's normal to have about a quarter inch or less of front and back play on the forend as well as some slight twisting play, if that makes sense? I have a hogue forend but I seem to recall this doing this as well with the stock one. I guess I just don't like the bit of rattle this causes and would love if things were just a bit tighter.

Any feedback greatly appreciated!

Why? The 590A1 is a military shotgun. It was designed with loose tolerances to facilitate reliable operation in the dirtiest of conditions.

All mossberg forends have that play. The reason why is the gap between the forend and the barrel exists so that the forend can actually go readwards even if the barrel is thicker near the chamber.

Open the action, try to twist or wiggle the forend. You'll see what I mean. All in all, it is a good thing, if it's covered in mud and stuffed full of leaves and branches and debris, you can shake it off and it'll keep on trucking. Mossbergs are great.

NO. Mossbergs have tight tolerances but it has more clearance space. Don't mix them up (picture related). You can have a +/- 0.001" tolerance on a sliding fit but a clearance space of 0.010". You've also got a tolerance on the clearance space itself. They're all things you can't mix up, or you might end up with a really bad interference (they just won't bloody fit together).

Meph: I never realized that there was a difference. Thanks for the quick education! It makes sense that tolerances and clearances are very different things.

I put a couple of those sticky felt pads (for on the bottom of chair legs to keep them from scuffing up your nice hardwood floors) on the inside of the fore end. Took a lot of the slop away, and still functions 100%. You'll know if you've got many in there because much like Meph said, you won't be able to fully cycle the action.
