Can anyone provide a link to a prior discussion on this firearm or give me some more detail regarding this rifle. I am wanting to get "retire" my bubba'd Lee Enfield and am on a limited budget. The Mossberg 100 ATR caught my eye, but don't have any info on it. Thanks.

The ATR is a Howa action. It gets good reviews, there are a few threads on it here, but I know the search tool sucks. It's very similar to the Weatherby Vanguard

I had an ATR 100 to try out. I don't think it's made by Howa, I could be wrong. It was for years the Charter Arms 1000 before it became the ATR100. The one I had shot well and I liked it. Many think the Stevens 200 is a better gun for the same money. I see little if any advantage to either, they are both good rifles for the cost.

I would honestly look at the Stevens 200, you can change the barrel on it just as easy as any of the other Savage bolt action, get a Long action 200 and you can shoot anything from 22-250 thru 300 win mag, just have to change the bolt face when going to the win mag. All the other function fine thru it. Takes about 20 minutes to do a barrel swap, and do it right. One nut holdiing the barrel to the action. Many rifles for a low cost. I like interchangability, can't get that with the ATR. Les

Prosper, the ATR is not even close to a Howa action. It is really quite its own species :D , not really much like anything else currently on the market. It is the old Raptor that sunk into oblivion with few tears a few years ago.

Some quotes from another site;

The Raptor died.

Then it became the Charter Arms and died.

Then it became the Mossberg and should die.

.....everything about them was rough.

The 710 would be a HUGE step up from the Raptor.

My buddy won a Raptor at a dinner several years back. It is without question the biggest unabashed pile of junk I have ever seen in my life. Second place is not even close.

Mike_Canuck, Les has it right. Please look at a Stevens 200 before you put your money down.

I'm a fan of Mossbergs older rifles, but I really liked the Savage 200 I handled a few weeks back.

My pick for sure...

Violator22,
Actually the ATR uses a nut the same as the Stevens/Savage, it's just tapered and harder to see. You could swap barrels as easily. Also, the interchangable bolt heads of the Savage/Stevens is great in theory, but try to find them. I have been trying without any success. I was talking to Mysticplayer on this and he is having the same issue.
I am not saying the ATR is better than the Stevens, but the features are the same if you wanted to do a swap barrel thing. I would add a few bucks and get an SPS myself, but the ATR and Stevens 200s are not bad rifle values for the money.
I just got a Remington 710 to try out. Now there is a real piece of stinky!

That's what Prosper is thinking of!

Mossberg used the Howa actions about fifteen years ago for their centerfire rifles. I had one in 338 for a while, and he is right, they looked almost identical to a Vanguard.

I too am looking at this rifle. There was a review off one on here not to long ago. It was a 270. The only reson i'd take the mossy over the stevens is:
the better looking stock
comes with bases installed
come swith a gun lock

These are all minor things but when comparing to very similar rifles why not get the one with the free stuff. The above comments are the first bad ones I've heard.

I ordered a barrel nut wrench from them, there are many satisfied customers on the Savage shooters forum, I think Mad Dog could back me up with this, shoot him a PM. That is where I learned about the Savage and Stevens rifles configurations. Les

Oh no I'm thinking waaaay older, the 800 series back in 66 for example.

I'd love a 800M (Mannlicher stock) in .308 or 22/250

Yes, I remember them. The only one I ever saw was in Juneau, Alaska. IIRC it was a 308 Win and it really was a different action.

Did they produce them in long calibers such as 30-06 or 270?

I believe that stevens 200's come with a lock. Its the padlock with the long coil.

I may be getting confused with my marlin 22 though. if so, my bad.

You are not confused, it does come with that ribed cable lock.

I have both the Stevens 200 and a ATR in 30-06. Between the two, I prefer the mossberg. It looks better and feeds better than the Savage.

If you can actually get your hands on both and try them for "feel", whichever fits you better is probably the better choice for you.
