Hi Everyone,

I recently acquired a Mossberg 1550 (Howa action) in .270WIN. This firearm originally came with the detachable magazines when new, but they were missing when I got the firearm, and I cannot find them anywhere online or locally for purchase.

Option 1: look on forums such as this one so I can find at least 1 or preferably 2 magazines for my new rifle. If you have one and are willing to part with it, please let me know.

Option 2: purchase and try this aftermarket part (https://www.legacysports.com/catalog/howa/ammo-boost-detachable-magazines/). This way I can buy the detachable magazines. I believe it is designed for the Howa 1500, but I am hoping it will fit my Mossberg (because they are the same action?). Any advice on this? Has anybody done this? I am not sure if anybody in Canada sells this, but I can pick one up when I go to the States in a few weeks.

Any help would be nice. I'd like to turn my single shot bolt action in a proper bolt action :)

Buy it in Yellowknife? Just asking as I bought an SKS off a guy locally and he had a 1550 in .270 with no mag. I told him if I could source a mag that I would buy it. I looked for about 2 months with no luck. Obviously I didnt buy it.

Finding an original 1550 mag is near impossible, unless you just stumble over one, in which case you should run right out and buy a lottery ticket as well.
I contacted Legacy about swapping 1500 mag parts into a 1550, and they felt it would work, but may need some fitting. Presumably the same with the mag kit adapters.
The one key is that the 1550 magwell in the stock is wider than the 1500. I found this out when I tried to stuff a 1550 in a stock for a 1500. I would think the aftermarket mag kits should drop right in the 1550, but with some extra gap around it.

Gonna go out on a limb here. I've been told the Weatherby Vanguard is built on a Howa action. Magazine interchangeability ?

Thanks for calling legacy. I think I may just buy the legacy kit, even if it doesn't fit properly, and keep my eye open for the original mags anyway (keeping the original parts obviously)

Same as the one in the gunsamerica link above.

I've owned this style of detachable mag in a Smith & Wesson. They are all steel and very nicely made and look like a floorplate when installed.

Yes, to use the Howa/Vanguard bottom metal you would need the floorplate, trigger guard, and mag box, follower etc. Thats what legacy figures would fit, but its narrower width ways than the 1550. Likewise the new plastic ones should fit, so they say, but with the same extra gap. If you want metal, you can but the parts from legacy or try the EE, for the plastic detachable kind you can pick those up in a variety of places.

So I tried a 1500 mag assembly in a 1550, here are the results:

As you can see the 1550 stock is inletted for the wider factory detachable mag, so once you throw in the standard Howa bottom metal you have some gaps left. They are not big gaps, and you could simply fill them with bedding compound, but it did bolt right up.
