Mossberg 183 kd choke attachment.

I have a Mossberg 183kd .410 bolt shotgun. Awhile ago I was shooting it and saw the c lect choke fly off into the brush (I found all the pieces). The end of the barrel has a (slightly) tapering thread on it but the choke body where it "sleeves" over the barrel is not threaded inside. It appears that the choke assembly is held on only by the bead sight threads which comes through the choke. The bead screws through the choke body and into a hole in the end of the barrel. The threads through the choke look ok, but the hole in the barrel is elongated. The threads on the bead itself are rough and I cannot thread things back together.

Looks like at very least, I need to replace the bead sight and chase the threads through the choke. I would appreciate any insight on where to get a new bead sight, size and pitch of the bead sight thread, viability of increasing the size of the bead sight thread or of adding another screw on the bottom of the choke hold everything together a little more securely.

Hoping someone will be familiar with the firearm/problem!

I'm pretty sure the choke is silver soldered into the barrel. I don't think the beed sight would hold it very long, that is why it looks buggered up.

Thanks Iceman. It sure does not look like it is/was silver soldered. I will take another look with that in mind. Perhaps I will try for some pictures so you can see better. Thanks again,

I removed the choke from a Mossberg 12 gauge (a gun that was beyond repair) and found exactly what you describe. I believe that the choke was a heat shrink fit over threads. There was no sign of solder or locking compound. The reason for this method of construction is a mystery to me but it seems to be the way Mossberg does them. I installed this choke on my Cooey single shot using the same method but I added a grub screw to the under side as an extra bit of re-enforcement. I have used this gun a lot since and have had no problems with it at all.

If I were repairing what you describe I would cut off the original threaded portion and make a fresh start (and add the screw on the under side).

Thanks Polar_Hunter! Great pictures and explanation. I have some more questions, but it is the first day of deer gun season here so kinda rushed to head out again. I did a quick check with vernier calipers and it seems there is a slight taper to the barrel threads and the inside of the choke. My barrel threads are in pretty good shape except where the bead sight screw "ripped out" as the choke went south. I will have to source a new bead sight and a grub screw (hopefully blued). They look like about a #8 screw but a very fine pitch. Any ideas on size/pitch? I found a new sight for this gun online at numrich (sp) but assume they may be fairly generic and available in Canada? If it is a pitch I do not have (likely) I will have to source a tap as well. (perhaps brownells?)

I will work on this a little more after its dark!
