recently began cleaning up an old mossberg 195 bolt action shotgun. The gun was rarely used (approx less than 10 rounds through it some 20 years ago). Im looking to get it cleaned up and back in service; and although it seems to go together smoothly when I draw the bolt back to chamber the next round it slides right out the rear end of the receiver. Ive looked the mechanism over and over and cannot see anything missing or worn. Having read a couple manuals I also see the procedure for bolt removal is to simply hold the triger down as I draw the bolt; thus negating the possibility of any retention clips or set screws. I'm at a loss here so any help is welcome, I can provide pics if it offers any additional insight. Information on this particular piece seems hard to come by.

Cheers!

i do not have a answer other than i would try a good cleaning of the bolt and the trigger assembly as it is probably stuck and letting your bolt slide past a stop.20 years sitting and it will be dry and possibly seized . wd 40 works for me on seized parts .these guns i believe are much older than twenty years so it has had a lot of time sitting .

The trigger engages the cut on the underside of the forward part of the bolt (913), preventing it from coming out of the receiver. Sounds like the spring (941/942) under the rear portion of the trigger is weak or gone.

the trigger seems to function correctly, I cant seem to find 941/942 or where they would mount in the receiver.

They actually mount in the trigger. If you took the trigger pin out and the trigger off, the spring and plunger would be in the trigger. The # "932" with the arrow is almost pointing directly to it
It is possible that the trigger is worn out, or "gunsmithed", to the point of it not holding the bolt in. I may have a trigger.

im rather new to tinkering with these things, do i just punch that pin out?
im not sure if it would be worn/smithed, my grandfather bought it new (for$35 lol) used it twice to hunt with friends then gave it to my dad without the bolt (gpa didnt want the bolt in the house with kids)

the trigger does "spring back" its almost as if with the bolt inserted the trigger doesnt return to where it should (or where I think it should, as well its almost as if the bolt needs to go further ahead in the reciever (it hits the stop however)

I would take it to someone who has experience with working on firearms. It sounds like it would be a relatively easy fix.
PM me if you want to send it this way.

well the only smith around is open 2 days a week if that so that option is out.
being rather mechanically inclined and considering myself rather confident in my abilities I feel like this should be a rather straightforward fix. Ill take a look at it tonight and if need be will arrange to have it looked at

This is my 195-K-A (don't know if you have this or the earlier model, they're much the same):

The catch is sprung (as part of the trigger mechanism); do you have such a catch on top of your trigger, and does it pop up on its own?

The groove on the front half of the bolt is what catches to prevent removal of the bolt without holding the trigger down. You have to watch the assembly of the bolt: the bolt head and body rotate completely, and the proper orientation is as shown with the striker cut-out aligned with the catch groove.

as I suspected I think part of the bolt is missing, I didnt see anything missing as per the parts diagram so I wasnt sure what to make of it.

Are you saying that the entire bolt head is missing??

On another note, I never realized that there was a spring on the firing pin since in 25 years I have never seen one on mine, so I checked and sure enough, no spring. But the spring from a retractable pen seems to fit just perfect...

I have NO idea how I missed that hahaha, yikes, that really would explain the issue at hand. how hard is this piece to separate ? it may still be in the drawer at my grandparents place.

...still shaking my head at missing such an obvious piece....wow

Im new but not that new; rebuilt an old cooey and took it right down and brought it back just fine. my first hint should have been no extractor and that chambering a round with the firing pin is probably not the best idea....

Yeah, the bolt head un-locks when you spin it so it's upside-down. Hope they keep all their old junk.

Could have been a Prussian needle gun?

No you're right, it's obvious when you see the assembled bolt, but not necessarily so when you're handed an un-familiar fire-arm.

albeit rather late (gotta love how life gets in the way sometimes) I've managed to find the missing piece of the bolt in my grandparents garage and got her all cleaned up and polished. so far she's smooth as glass and cycles just the same. some snap caps and a little love from the cfo and ill have her home and shortly thereafter at the range. rather quite enjoy little projects like these, especially great for nights when youre sitting infront of the tv for a couple hours.

2 down, and as it seems, many more to go!

Glad to hear that they don't throw stuff away. Much easier than tracking down replacement parts. Good luck with the gun.

Why do you need to get the CFO involved with your shotgun? You're not in Quebec. Or are you still waiting on your PAL? If so, I hope you were working on the gun under licensed supervision (not really, but the RCMP does).

Just waiting on my PAL. Was working on it at a friends place who has his PAL; didnt want to chance driving around and getting caught with it, not worth the consequences. by love from the cfo I just meant he has all my paperwork and photo etc; let's hope it doesnt take them 6 months to do everything. I want to go pick up my stuff haha.

I was suprised they had either to be honest, they throw a lot of stuff out. Even more surprised when they were both just in a container of random odds and ends in the garage.
