After reading about the older Mossberg rifles, I decided to get one and give it a try. Needless to say, they shoot very impressively to say the least. With peep sights which I've never shot before I managed at 25 yds a very decent five shot group of .120 with one flyer (my fault), and a ten shot group of .225.
At fifty yds I managed a five shot group of .854 with an inconsistant cross wind.
Ammo was Federal Gold Match.
Now if only I could figure out how to make that fifty yd target clearer and larger!

Peeps are a short distance option. If the gun has grooved receiver, you can install a high mount scope

No grooved receiver. However, it is drilled and tapped for side mount scope.
Not sure which side mount to use and if so, do I stay with a "vintage" 1940's scope. So far the rifle is original.

very hard to find a vintage mount. brownells sells a mount that takes modern rings.

i shoot a Mossberg 144lsb heavy barrel for target and gophers. At 100 yards with bulk ammo...it shoots minute of gopher or about 1 inch or less with a 10 x scope. Gophers this spring for it. I also shoot 3 - model 151s and a 152 and they are very impressive for targets.
