Mossberg 44US

muddler...so what happened?
I just got mine and totally impressed with the full-size feel of this rifle. They sure don't make them like they used to!

If they tried to make a new rifle like one of the 44 series with the same sights and quality of stock you would likely be looking at $700-$1000

Mossberg even went to the extent of hand lapping barrels on various target models. I have a model 43B that I was told would have been a hand lapped barrel. It's even drilled and tapped for the Speigel scope mount system. It's another variation of the 44 series.

Beauty rifle, mine likes SK Standard Plus. You can get a scope mount that fits the factory D&T.

I have 2 of the mounts. They fit great. You have to remove the bolt dust cover or relief cut the mount to clear the cover. I ordered 1 of mine through Williams Arms in Port Perry Ont.the other came on one of my guns. Nice thing is you can use standard rings with the rail instead of trying to find decent rimfire rings that are not over priced.
Brownell's carry them as well.

Nice to know there are options for such an "old" rifle but I think I'll keep this one with peeps. I'll have to keep my eyes open for quality .22lr the next time I'm shopping for ammo.
Mine also came with a set of original swivels. I like slings on my rifle so can anyone suggest a "correct" one and where I can source it. I may just pick up a simple leather sling at LeBaron's or Bass Pro.

johNTO have a look on the site link below.
You can get an idea of what the proper slings look like'
Here's a link if anyone is interested.

Lots of pictures and if you scroll to the bottom of the page and click the curled arrow there is an information section on sights, magazines, bolts etc. Lots of pictures

JohNTO. Well,I bought the 44US(c) It looks exactly like the photo you posted. It has a sling and front hooded sight with a little ring outside that moves the post. The condition is excellent with no no apparent mods. I am not too familiar with peep sights ant target shooting in general but the sight picture with this thing is amazing-even with my older eyes. I will take some pics and post them here if anyone is interested.
I bought the 99C Savage 243 as well.
cheers, Bob

I just got back from the range and at 25 yrds I can barely see 1"dots. I will have to pick up some C-more's next time. I'm new to peeps also but shooting with them is a lot of fun.
Mine shot very accurately even with Win555's (all I had). If I ever scope this rifle and get some decent ammo...look out!
An hour and a half has never gone by so fast at the range. I brought some pistols but they stayed in their cases.
My only suggestion to you is not to screw down the two trigger guard screws too much. It may affect the clearance of the trigger(inside the guard) to reset properly allowing the bolt assembly to back out when you rack an empty round. Don't ask me how I know;)

Yes, post some pics and let us know how it shoots!

You have to watch the trigger guards. They can shrink and I have seen 2 that were warped enough to cause the trigger to bind a little because it was rubbing on one side. Can make for frustration trying to figure out whats wrong.

Easy fix for the trigger gaurd if it has shrunk. I heat with a hair drier for a couple of minutes and put slight pressure with a hand clamp while continung to heat. I have done several this way and they have gone right back into place. You don't want to put too much pressure at one time or you will crack it.

Here are some pics of the Mossberg 44US(c)
It has a S100 peep and , I believe, a S106 ramp front. The hood on the front site slides off and you can select from 4 different posts. The sling mounts can be removed with a little push button mechanism. Sorry about the clutter on my fly tying bench in the pics.

"shrinking trigger guard"....???? I took mine off and its made of plastic! Who knew? Not me. That explains why it could shrink.
So I looked around in my tool box and found a thin washer that fit perfectly as a shim for the front screw. Once installed it provided the proper clearance between the trigger and the guard. Everything looks and feels the same eg. there's no gap between the stock and the guard. Racking the bolt now allows the trigger to shift forward and back without contact.
She's cleaned up and ready for another session tomorrow.

Muddler, it's in great shape! Nice wood and blueing on that one. Nice score and it looks like you have plenty of clearance in the trigger guard. Yours looks newer than mine with the same sights and swivels less the dust cover on the bolt.
