With deer season approaching and my 9 year old sons newfound interest in " Cowboy " guns I figured I had all the excuse I needed to replace the Win 94 that I had owned and eventually sold years ago. I've got a soft spot for 30 30 leverguns ( I shot my first deer with my Dads Win 94 ) and I was determined to find a rifle that would shoot straight for a decent price.

I'd been reading reviews for the current crop of Marlin leverguns and I wasn't impressed. I looked at used Winchesters but had no luck finding a rifle in good condition for a price I was willing to pay. The third option - the Mossberg 464 30 30

It's very similar to the Win 94 other than the pistol grip stock which I wasn't a fan of before, but i feel like it fills my hand better than the straight stock. The checkering is deep and very clean. I'm impressed overall with the fit and finish.

The action was a bit rough out of the box, but after a good cleaning and oiling it started functioning much smoother. The tang safety and lack of half #### were a bit odd to me before I'd handled it, but I adjusted quickly and now I like the idea that the safety operation is similar to my 590A1.

I'd cycled the action a couple of hundred times before going to the range and firing 40 rounds of Remington 170 gr. The action works perfectly now and can be easily cycled without lowering from the shoulder. I fired 4 groups of 3 rounds each to align the sights, after that I was getting three shot groups of 1.5 to 2 inches at 50 yards ( I was shooting at an indoor range ). Not great, but I know there is room for improvement. I didn't think to keep my target until after my son had obliterated it with my 10 22. I'll be back at the range next weekend and I'll be sure to update with some 50 yard target pics.

I paid $439 at The Shooting Edge in Calgary, AB. I've got find a source for cheap ammo as I'm going to want to shoot a couple of boxes of ammo on the weekends before the season starts. Overall I'm impressed with the overall quality of this rifle, it's better than I expected!

Provided you stick with plain-vanilla ammo like Winchester PowerPoints or Federal Hi-Shok, the .30-30 is already inexpensive to shoot. There aren't many other purely sporting, non-mil rifles left you can feed for under a buck a round.
