Hey everyone im looking at buying my first hunting rifle and my choice is the 4x4 300 or a Savage 30-06. The Savage is cheaper but I would like a better than basic first gun. What are ur thoughts on the mossberg, its 24" blued, fluted with muzzle break, no scope i will purchase separate.
Mostly for deer, elk and moose.

Then expand your search. Both are pretty low rent basic models. I hate to say it but even a 700SPS would be a better choice.
Better yet, save your money until just before hunting season and buy a real gun like a M70 or perhaps a Ruger.
No matter what though, be sure to handle and shoulder any gun before you buy it... One will feel just right.

The guy with the nice hooters isn't steering you too far wrong.
Junk is junk.
Check out the Trade Ex site sponsor and have a gander at some of their Husky 30-06.
I think them used is better than what you have on your list.
Just a couple $.02 for you.

Dang Tommy, you gotta show'em............

If you want a better than basic first hunting rifle skip the 4x4 if you are happy with a basic than the savage is a fine option I know a few guys that have started with them. Once you are quite experienced you may know what you are really looking for and when your spending some decent money on that good hunting rifle, good to know what YOU want, and not just what someone else recommends.

End of the day, each gun fits a little different, decide your price range, and do some research and buy the gun you are excited about

I agree with the guy pushing the Husky's on tradex, my bro in law sold me his Husky 3006 after he picked up a 300 wby mag, and i love it cant wait for deer and moose season to give her a try out. Gonna pick up some ammo soon and start practicing with it. Beauty rifle with only a few minor flaws for a classic old rifle.

I would go with a Savage Axis or a Ruger American.

I wouldnt get an axis. I have had 2. Save some more money and get something better. Dont be shy of used ones. Trade ex has some great deals as well. Remember cheap guns are always gonna be cheap guns. When its time to sell and get something better you wont get much for a cheapo gun. Buy quality now and save money. By once cry once. I learnt this the hard way.

My buddy had a Mossberg 4x4 3 years ago, he owned for a week then took it back. He bought it for general hunting at a good price. Shot 10 rounds out of it and took it back. He would rather shoot his .338 mag over that, it booted like a freaking mule, the best he could do with handloads was 2.5" at 100 yards and overall he was not impressed. At the same time I bought my savage axis in 270 win.

Right nwo I shoot a savage axis in 270 win. That gun with federal blue box 130gr and I could 0.98" @100 yards. Its a cheap gun, but for $350 you cant go wrong. Then put the other $300 you have left over and buy a nice scope and out it on. Use it for 2-3 years, then when you have enough buy a $800-$1000 gun and put the scope on it and your golden. That's what I did, and right now im ordering a Weatherby Vanguard S2 in .300 WSM from cabelas and for under $700 you get the rifle, 3.5-10x42 scope and hard case. Cant complain with that, and in another 2 years, ill put a Vortex Viper HS 2.5-10x44 scope on. Then my 270 will be my "toy" to go and shoot coyotes, gophers etc with and for hunting my 300 will come out.

My dad, uncle and grandpa all have a savage 111 fcxp3 in 270 win and they all shoot anywhere from 0.5"@ 100 yards to 1"@100 yards. Good guns, good price. They are a step up from the axis, and overall a nicer gun. If your interested Prairie Gun Traders in Avonlea, Sk HAD (might have sold it) one in 270 win for I think $275. It was my buddy's that he traded for a Remington 700 tactical in 308 and that gun would shoot 0.77"@ 100 yards with handloads. Phone up and ask, cant hurt anything.

BTW the vanguard s2 is guaranteed Sub-moa @100 yards, and the action is, in my opinion, 10 steps up from a Remington 700.

I've got a 300 Wm in the savage and love it. A Lot of new shooters that try it says it's to much for them. I tried my buddies mossberg and couldn't get it to shoot under 2" groups and it beat the piss out of me. I love mossbergs but doubt I'll ever own any of their center fire guns. Savages are ugly and my Stevens are even uglier but they shoot true and I won't cry when I scratch them or rub the bluing off. Personally I like to be different but the old 3006 is hard to beat

I get a kick out people who discount the Mossberg 4x4, because it seems that all of the negative posts I read on this site are not first hand experience with the rifle. It's always; my buddy or a guy I know or just someone who has had read a bad review on the rifle, recommending to stay away from the 4x4. I can attest from "first hand experience" with the 4x4 that it is a good value and it is definitely a step up over the Axis and even the 111/11 package. I can say this with confidence as I had a Savage model 110( which I thought was the cats a#%), until I bought a 4x4. I no longer own the savage. As for buddy who couldn't get better groups than 2.5" @ 100yds, maybe he needs to spend more time learning how to shoot properly. I am able to get sub-moa( in the neighbourhood of .75") with factory loads, while lying prone with a bipod. So my point is if you don't really have "first hand knowledge" why bother to comment at all. Just sayin'. Cheers.

IIRC Epps website shows that they have a bunch of Ruger Americans in 30/06... Just sayin'.

PS I don't work for nor am I affiliated with either company.? ;)

I really like the looks of the 4x4 and I have shot about 100 rounds threw the 270 and 50 threw the30- 06,each of them came with brakes, they don't come off very easy,we tried to get both of them off with no luck, they are very loud and they blow back in your face.each of them gave me a headache. They were friends rifles and neither had much luck with factory ammo.I reloaded some bullets for them and it took quite a bit of trying different combinations but finally got them to shoot decent (1" @ 100 yds.).The 270 was very nice to shoot, kicked like my 243 but the 06 had a very hard recoil pad and kicked like a mule even with the brake on it. One thing I did figure out with both of them was that they shot a lot better with clean barrels. We cleaned them about every 10 shots and they would group better after cleaning. I personally would not buy one because I have Weatherby Vangaurds . Remington 700's and Brownings and there is no comparing them.but to each there own,I think they are not a bad rifle for the money and if you do buy the 4x4 get the store to remove the muzzle brake or take it to a gunsmith,I did like the brake for target shooting(I wore a tuke to keep the blast from giving me a headache) but not for hunting. One last thing to mention was we put a limbsaver on the 06 and that tamed it down.
