The Mossberg definitely has some mixed reviews. I only know one guy personally who has one; he likes it and has brought home his moose and bison with it. He's a hunter, not a gunnut.
The Ruger American doesn't come in 300 win mag as far as I can tell. Too bad, really.
I'd suggest a Stevens 200 or Savage package gun if you are looking for a rifle in .300 win mag to get the job done at a reasonable price.
I've got a Stevens 200 in 300 win mag and it shoots like a house on fire, and there are plenty of aftermarket accessories if you want.
As others have said, the 300 win mag is not at all a great starter cartridge. Unless you are wanting to shoot your animals regularly at over 400 yards, a .270/.308/30-06 will be a better starter gun, maybe better all around actually. My Stevens 200 in 300 win mag kicks more than either of my .338's.
