Frontier Firearms has them on for $379.95, seems like a good deal..........question is, would this be a suitable shotgun for wilderness defense? Or is this too cheap for a dependable pump-shotgun?

I have one, works fine. When you pump it, give it a good stroke, don't be gentle with it.

I managed to get mud in the action of my 500 on the opening morning of goose season a couple years ago. It made it a bit slow to cycle, but it never jammed, failed to fire or failed to extract or eject for the rest of the morning. Stripped it and cleaned it after lunch and was business as usual for the afternoon hunt. I have no idea how many rounds I have through mine, but I have never had a problem with it.

You can buy a Remington 870 Express for about the same amount of money, or even less for a used gun, and you will have a better shotgun.

I like the Mossberg 500s, don't get me wrong, but inside the trigger group there is a bakelite "tit" that holds the action in place. Firing repeated magnum shells can break that tit off, and then the gun will not lock up, and MIGHT slam-fire on closing. Your new part will cost you about eighty bucks plus gunsmith time. I paid my tuition to learn this lesson.

So if I am counting on a back-country gun, it would be an 870, and millions of hunters and shooters would agree with me.

I'm not sure when they changed, but Mossberg no longer uses Bakelite in the trigger groups. Not sure what the new material is or when they switched (some form of nylon maybe?). Maybe they switched the material to eliminate the problem Doug mentioned? There were other issues with the bakelite such as cracked/broken trigger guards as well (bakelite is a pretty brittle material).

I have had my Mossy 500 for several years, and about 3000 rounds through her, no problems. All I know is she doesn't like the Winchester cheap stuff very much.

back to Workin Man, thanks for that update. The Mossy I had that broke was for sure an older gun, probably a 70's manufacture.

I am glad they fixed the problem since I just bought a Mossy 500 combo in 20 ga for my young lad! ;) But I had figured that it was in no danger of firing repeated magnum loads anyways.
