Hi Fellas

Any of you have a Mossberg 500 20 gauge pump combo ?
How do like it ? Did it come with the 2 barrels , smooth bore with Accu Choke and a rifled barrel ?
Please let me know your thoughts or something suitable , I don’t wNt top tier but don’t want problematic junk .
Thank You !

You wont go wrong with a 500. They are lighter than 870's so they are easier to tote around, they have 2 extractors vs 1 on the 870 so they are very reliable especially with cheap garbage ammo. I have 7 mossberg punps and love them. Bulletproof really. I dont use rifled shotgun barrels so cannot comment. I use rifles here for big game. Shotguns for not big game. Obviously, different juristictions have different requirements regarding projectiles.

Mossberg 500's last a long time. Eventually the operating arms break, but that's after about 30K rounds.

Never seen an operating arm break under normal usage. Early Mavericks came with a single action bar which could bend if reinstalled improperly or smacked hard and worked super hard with a filthy gritty action, but I doubt seriously anyone breaking one with dual arms. (Which the 500's come with AND modern maverick 88's)

I'm sure most people will have no problem. Especially if they use their Mossberg for things like hunting or clay shooting. I would choose a Mossberg over a 870 most of the time, too.

The wood versions with the tube style forend connection are much better than the stacked in style of the synthetic versions. I've seen several synthetic forensic break off on newer mossbergs.
For reasons stated above mossbergs are great and I've put mine thru some very rough use and they still function fine

Brybenn ! Is this the version you think is the best ?

Im looking at the Mossberg website and wondering what would be the best combo the one I listed above or a different combo that might include a canted rifled barrel that you could put a scope on .But I don’t see an option in that for a wood stocked 20 gauge ?

Thank You

Ya the wood forend is held on by a metal tube and nut. Much better design then the synthetic version

I don't think there is any difference in how the synthetic and wood forends are held on. When I have bought replacement arm assemblies there has never been a distinciton in the part # between wood and synthetic that I can recall.

Got 2x 20ga 500 bantams about 5 years ago for sub 300$ at Canadian Tire. Fit and finish is in line with a 300$ shotgun. That being said they have both been very reliable with over 10k rounds each. No broken parts, no failures to eject or feed. No issues with the synthetic fore-end on either one. A fun little gun to bust clays or a grouse without feeling bad about using it.

Okay Thanks !

I know Remington 870,s are around the same price poin5 as the Mossberg 500,s . Are there any other 20 gauge pump shotguns that offer the feature of changing out barrels from smooth bore with changeable chokes to rifled barrels that is easy to do and also not cost a fortune ?
And are those said shotguns of decent quality ?

The browning bps. It's a bit more than the Mossberg but there are frequently good used deals. It is much smoother in operation and much better fit and finish than the Mossberg. It's bottom feed/bottom eject so truly ambidextrous (in case you're a lefty). I would go with the bps over the Mossberg any day of the week even if I had to spend a bit more to get a decent used one. It's a higher quality shotgun. Epps carries a bunch of barrels, sometimes has used ones.
Haven't used a rem 870 so can't compare

Okay so the BPS comes in20 gauge pump but can you get rifled barrels for it ?

Any reason you’re set on a rifled barrel? Take a look at the price of 20g sabot slugs, if it’s anything like the price of 12g sabots you might have a heart attack lol. I bought a 12g three barrel 870 combo awhile back and the rifled slug barrel was super picky with sabots, I had the idea to use it for bear hunting but after shooting 5-6 brands of sabot slugs I couldn’t get acceptable accuracy from any of them at 100y. So it sits collecting dust in my safe till I find something it shoots well, at $20-25 for 5 12g sabots I’m better off with my .303 or .308 for bears as I’m not in a shotgun only MU.

I am also in the market for a 3-barrel combo, as I have usage for all 3 and it sounds like a bargain.
I am considering either the Mossberg 500 (pump) or 930 (semi) in the 3-barrel combo. Is the accuracy with the rifled barrels a common issue, or just something you've experienced with whatever combo of slugs you found?
In our area, shotgun season is the same as muzzleloader, and a buddy of mine (fellow CGN'r) is into muzzleloaders, so I figured this would be a good option to join him. Typical ranges would be 50-75 yards.

Dumb question: Do the barrels not in use need to be in the safe? I assume not, but wondering... since they'll take up some room and potentially get knocked around a bit.
