I'm interested in people's opinions of the Mossberg 500. A non CGN affiliated dealer currently has a nice deal on a 2 barrel combo (28" fixed mod choke and 18.5" cyl bore). I currently hunt with a Mossberg 590, mostly upland birds and rabbits for a few years now, however I would like to get into waterfowl. I like the set up of the Mossberg safety and slide release, but the 590 is too front heavy and has no choke.
The biggest sticking point on the 500 for me is the cheap furniture. While the stock is easily changed, my research tells me that the forend has no action slide tube. The way the slide is attached to the action bars looks downright cheesy to me, especially since I tend to break everything I touch.
My 2 questions to my fellow CGNers are:
Is the forend on the newer Mossbergs a sturdy well built design?
If not, does anybody know a place in Canada that sells action slide tubes for the 500? I've found them on American websites, but hate shopping outside of Canada. CGN affiliated dealers are a plus as well.
