Mossberg 500 combo questions

I'm interested in people's opinions of the Mossberg 500. A non CGN affiliated dealer currently has a nice deal on a 2 barrel combo (28" fixed mod choke and 18.5" cyl bore). I currently hunt with a Mossberg 590, mostly upland birds and rabbits for a few years now, however I would like to get into waterfowl. I like the set up of the Mossberg safety and slide release, but the 590 is too front heavy and has no choke.

The biggest sticking point on the 500 for me is the cheap furniture. While the stock is easily changed, my research tells me that the forend has no action slide tube. The way the slide is attached to the action bars looks downright cheesy to me, especially since I tend to break everything I touch.

My 2 questions to my fellow CGNers are:

Is the forend on the newer Mossbergs a sturdy well built design?

If not, does anybody know a place in Canada that sells action slide tubes for the 500? I've found them on American websites, but hate shopping outside of Canada. CGN affiliated dealers are a plus as well.

Hey, just purchase the models with the hardwood stocks, those have the action tube assembly. I believe the prices are equivalent mostly/ cheaper than buying a new action tube.

Thanks for the input. I think I'm going to rob the slide tube off my 590. I was planning on selling it to recoup some of my money anyway, I'll just lower the price.

Tubes are different lengths, 500 being shorter, 590 being longer. You can get the extra length adapter tube from Hogue though.

500 with Hogue adapter on left, 590 on right

Mossberg 500 with no action tube (bars)? I don't believe so unless something has changed.

I know on some of the models they fused the forend and action bars/tube together so you have to swap a whole new setup.

I was thinking about buying a 500 combo kit (because it's on sale) and selling the 18" and 28" barrels and installing just the 14" kit I was going to buy. Is there a market for 18" and 28" 500 barrels, brand new?

TACTICAL111, I was going to put a set of Hogue furniture on the shotgun anyway, if I'm picking up what you're putting down the Hogue forend should fit onto the 590 action tube, but will the 590 action tube be too long for the 500?

Mossberg has used the 2 different sizes and you'll have to find out what you have before you do the swapping. If Hogue sends you the adapter, then you are good to go to pair up the forends/mag tubes/action bars.

My 20" 500 Persuader, 18.5" 500 Road Blocker and 18.5" 590A1 all had the longer tube. My 14" 590A1 obviously has the shorter one. Some other models have the shorter one.

I had the Hogue forend on one of my 500's, it's very good. I had no compatibility issues with mine.

TACTICAL111 I appreciate the detailed answers. My wife however will curse the very ground you walk on, because tonight I'm buying a new shotgun!

If anyone buys a 12ga combo shotgun and wants to sell either one of the barrels (for a reasonable price, not $200) let me know...

I just picked up an old 500 that buddies kid had got ahold of and did unspeakable things to.

I'll most likely be selling a NEW 28" Vent Rib, Ported & Accu-Set Choked barrel (with chokes) when I receive my 500 Field, but seeing as the barrel alone is $270 at Cabela's, I'm still deciding on the asking price for mine but it won't be going for peanuts.

That's the issue though... People pay $380-$400 for a brand-new shotgun with 2 barrels, and expect to sell the unused barrel for 66% of that price because "that's how much they are at store 'X'..."

That's not logical... Especially when NIB 500's can be had for $350, used models for $250.

I'd be willing to spend up to $180 shipped on a barrel, regardless of length...

Just posted my brand new 28" dual bead, vent ribbed, ported, Accu-Choke barrel, w/2 chokes (chokes still sealed in plastic) for $170 + shipping in the EE. I think that's a fair price since it's new and much less than the store pricing. I don't eat anyone's shipping cost, been there, done that. It's been mounted on the shotgun and then taken off - that's it.

I'm using the receiver/stocks as a 14" build so I may have a whole magtube and forend assembly that I might post for sale later. Haven't received my kit yet, will see. If I can't use the wood, I'll sell that too.

About 3 years ago I bought that combo when it was $320. Sold the 28" barrel for $100 so it ended up being cheaper than the Maverick. Picked up a Promag slide action tube assembly or whatever you call it from Hical so I could put a Magpul handguard on it, haven't had any issues with it.

I got $165 for the barrel and there was a guy right after who was interested if the payment fell through. Of course, my barrel was a nicer one than what came with the combo, it was from the "Field" model.
