Not to open a can of worms but i was thinking of looking into a Mossberg 500 to keep my 870 company. This guy said, "you couldn't pay me to own one" I said "why" he told me it KB'd in his hand...another guy told me his felt very "loose" and flexed around. Is this true? Or are those pe ople just blowing smoke?

Blowing smoke. I have several Mossy 500's from an original design with the single action bar (60's era) to a newer one (late 90's). The only thing that rattles is the forearm if you shake it due to the slides. There are only 2 sticking points of the mossy 500. No mag extensions for the tactical guys, and the trigger assembly is plastic which is the weakest part. The actions are solid and have great lockup and I have never yet had the issues of small plates of metal bending and causing jams (870's biggest issue). I have shot thousands of rounds thru my Mossy's from trap & skeet shooting I cannot complain as the factory mossy seems to fit me perfectly.
I also have a remy for those thinking I'm against remmys. Great shotgun too, more widely available accessories, far more customizable. Just jams occasionally.

Now if you go to the cheaper Mossy versions (Maverick 88, etc...) They may be made cheaper, I do not know.

I myself like the Mossy over the Remy. Would I ever say "you couldn't pay me to own one"? Hell no. I'll take a Remy to shoot anyday. I just happen to like the Mossy better for feel and a solid action.

It's the same thing as asking the Win 94 vs Marlin 336 debate. Everyone has their own opinion, some just more biased than others. Try them out if you can. Decide what you are going to do with it. If It is for tactical games, Remmy is probably the way to go because of the extra customizability, but for waterfowl/clays/birds/deer/etc... either is just as good as the other.

Methinks the guy is talking out his a$$.

The Mossberg 500 is a well proven design, as is the 870. From what I have seen, and tried the Maverick is simply a lighter less expensive version of the 500.

Also I have never had my Maverick 88 bind on me.

If he had one blow up on him he must have done the classic 20 gauge shell down the pipe with a 12 behind it...even then he should be dead or at least have some obvious scars.

The 590A1 has a cast trigger group.

Big Mossberg fan here. Have one with a slug barrel and scope for deer and one for skeet shooting. The latter I've had for the last 17 years and it has fired an obscene amount of shells including a lot of slugs.

A Mossberg 500 was the gun that made me realize that I needed a pump-action twelve-gauge. I picked it up, the clouds parted, celestial light shone down from heaven, angelic choirs started singing "Ave Maria", the whole nine yards.

I actually find that the tang safety superior to the safety on the 870. If Baron Sports carried Mossbergs instead of Remingtons I'd have a couple of Mossys in my safe right now.

Pick one of the models which has a magazine cap. The fixed magazines found on the cheaper Mossberg/Maverick, which can be identified by a barrel attaching screw, make cleaning the magazine far more difficult. I noticed my 590 slicked up much nicer than some of the cheaper models bought by some guys around here for bear guns.

I believe at one time Mossberg had a single action bar on their pump guns, this would tend to feel loose. I don't believe any of the "500" line has a single action bar.

Not to side track, but you 500 experts may comment on mine, it's a 500ATP (nickel plated, I assume) it was a police surplus, the trigger system was all worn so I bought springs, sear ect.... and rebuilt it, works great. Any opinions on this version compared to other mossy versions??

My Maverick has a double action bar, but I have seen an older one that had a single action bar, not sure when they made the change to a double.
