I recently bought a new 500 Combo (Field bore and Security bore) but when trying to load shells I can only fit 1 in the chamber and 2 in the feed tube. There is a define hard stop and the spring doesn't compress anymore. I'm using 2-3/4" and the specs say that it has a 6 round capacity.

What am I doing wrong? Am I missing something or could the gun be defective?

Thanks..

more detail...

unscrew the barrel cap on the end of the tube magazine..

remove the small ring that keeps the magazine spring in place..

take out the piece of wood or plastic that runs inside the spring..

put it back together..

if you plan to use it for hunting, put the plug back in.

Hey thanks a lot. It's my 1st shotgun and I'm fairly new overall. Next time I suppose I'll read the instruction more thoroughly.

One other question, what's the purpose of the plug for hunting? I'm planning on getting licensed to hunt this year so I wouldn't know.

Thanks,

hey! welcome to the club! thats a good gun.hunting for migratory bird = 3 shot max. for deer, no plug needed.check yer local laws though. ALWAYS READ THE MANUAL =)

If you live in Ontario, you must plug your shotgun so ONLY 2 rounds fit within the magazine well. This is the LAW! and you will have every MNR officer you come across check your gun. It is how they get payed... so you bet they will check you. The reason for the 3 shot maximum as *taken directly from NMR officer*

"After 3 shots, your risk of wounding or maiming the animal raises beyond acceptable limits. If you can not hit it or kill it in 3 shots, you better god dam find it or you need to spend your time learning to shoot and not hunting."

And a tip about hunting, It may be called buckshot but it is the WORST round you can use to hunt with. If you absolutely must use a shotgun to hunt deer or large game. ONLY USE SLUGS ****ONLY SLUGS****.

Now that you have a nice mossy you can buy an interchangeable slug barrel for it. They pop in and out really easy and real fast. So you can even put the barrel in your pack and change it out on the fly. Just remember it must match your magazine, or else the end locking nut will not line up with your magazine. So just make sure you order the right barrel for your magazine size.

hope this helps

Yes, because the safety risk is unacceptable when migratory bird hunting.

Federal law says you are restricted to 2 rounds in the magazine for ducks/geese/migratory birds. Provincial laws often require the same 2 shot maximum. Check your hunting laws.

If you plan to hunt with this gun, leave the plug in. Nothing worse than going to the range and removing the plug and forgetting to put it back in the next day when you head out for a hunt. "Oops! Sorry Officer, I thought the plug was in it!" doesn't cut it with the game Wardens. You end up in court, loose your gun, get a fine, not allowed to hunt for X years, etc, etc..

Buy yourself another "range gun" if you want to use more than 2 shots in the mag at the range. Much cheaper than the fines, etc..

We are allowed to remove the plug in our shotguns upland/small game here but I always keep the plug in. I've been checked several times while hunting duck and it is just a habit now.

As mentioned already if you didn't hit/kill it in the first 3 shots, a forth or fifth isn't going to help.

Just an FYI. For the Mossberg 500, it is a bolt that holds the barrel on (it screws into the mag tube). To remove the limiting plug you need to unscrew the mag tube from the reciever.
Item #63 (Barrel retaining bolt)
Item #33 (Mag tube)

No spring clip to lose when it gets weak and springs out when you take off the retaining cap.
Also means no retaining cap to replace with a mag extension tube for tactical matches.
