My buddy picked up an old mossy 500 and is wondering if the mag tube/barrel mating is supposed to have a gap. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

I wouldn't think so. and if that space is normal I'd think it would have a washer or something there to "take up the slack".
I'd pull the barrel, make sure everything is clean on both the barrel and the receiver where it butts up to it.
I'll double check my 500 and even my 535 but I'm 99.9+% sure they both seat fully

Make sure the barrel extension is seated up against the inner receiver ceiling and ignore the gap if it does not go away.

My 28" VR barrel fits without a gap, an aftermarket slug barrel I bought has a gap. As above - make sure the rear barrel extension butts against the collar in the receiver and the locking lug engages and it will function fine.

As others have already said, just make sure the slide is half way back when you mate up the barrel. As long as you're fully seated don't worry about it, I've only seen this happen (big gap) when not fully seated, but some gap is normal.

Try to unscrew the mag tube a few millimetres so that everything lines up to his liking. I had this problem once because I over screwed the mag tube too much.
