Between the Mossberg 500 and Remington 870 Express, which would you choose and why? The Rem. is a little more money, but I've heard they are pretty similar guns. My Dad has an older Moss. 500, and it has been a good gun. I'm thinking of buying a basic shotgun for myslef.

All I want is a nice, reliable pump shotgun, 12g, I don't need/want anything bigger than 2.75" shells. If I can use 3" and 3.5" shells as well, fine, but I don't need them either.

I was looking at the combo packages from Wholesale, where you get the action, a choked barrel, and a fully rifled barrel. Right now I'm leaning towards the Mossberg, simply because it is less money. I know both a popular choices, both should be very reliable, and I doubt I could go wrong with either choice. But, is the Remington worth the extra $?

Go to a gunshop and handle both guns. Close your eyes and shoulder each one. Whatever feels that best to you, is the one to buy.

Saving a few bucks and getting a gun that doesn't fit you well, is a complete waste of money.

Totally agree. I have shot both and own a 870. In retrospect I would buy a 500 because it is quicker to load and the safety is in a quicker spot (for 3 gun matches)to get at. Quality wise they are both exceptional although the 870 is a bit beefier.

I just purchased the 870 Remington Express....I am extremely happy with it. I was out Goose hunting just the other day and the smooth action was awesome...Its all about personal choice but I would stick with the 870 Express...

I have 2 870's and a 500 Mossberg in 410...Both are good guns. I like my 870s more mainly because thats what I use 99.9 times Im out. But I do really like the tang safetyon mossbergs

I'm looking too

I'm also looking for my first gun and am looking at these two guns. I am looking at the combo versions of both. I hope to get a 12 ga. barrel and a fully rifled barrel for deer. I have heard great things about the 870 and almost nothing about the 500. I will have to try and see what i can find i guess. I hope to buy something second hand once I get a chance to get into the selling forum....just signed up...

I have an 870 and my friend has a 500, if I knew how low priced the 500s were I would have gotten one. The 1 thing that pisses me off about the 870 is that the front bead sight is pressed on, needs to be drilled and tapped to change it.

What about the model 88? I was looking at wholesale and saw this was an even cheaper pump that could be customized. Anybody use this??

Thanks,
Tyler

I was going through the same thing till a couple days ago. I held both the 870 and the 500. The 500 felt cheap to me and the 870 just was more comfortable. Try both. To each their own.

Were these synthetic models? I have a wood stocked 500 and it is much nicer than my dad's wood stocked 870 express. I guess I'm about average size and they both fit OK. Assuming it shoulders OK, the Mossberg 500 is a much better deal in my opinion.

The 870 probablely has a smoother action,I find my 590 to be just a little bit rougher compared to my ithaca 37.And my friends 870s action is like glass, but it is an older and well used one.
But ,IMHO,the mossberg is a little tougher action.better price, tang mounted safety, dual extractors, easier to unjam if a rd gets caught-up on the shell lifter.

For crying out loud try the triggers on both guns!!! Most of the new Mossbergs have crappy triggers... very creepy and like squeezing a rusty pair of vice grips! Most people try to pull the trigger and then check the safety wondering why it does not go click.. they suck.
I am serious.

There is a reason the 870 is more money. It will outlast the Mossberg in frequent usage. It is built more ruggedly of better materials. If you are only going to fire a couple of boxes of shells a year, buy the one that feels the best to you. If you are going to do a lot of shooting, buy the Remington.

That's the thing, I don't do lots of shooting. Maybe go a few times for ducks/geese, a few times for upland birds. Now that I think about it, I don't need the rifled barrell either. I'd sooner use a muzzleloader (longer season). Well, I'll go and try both before I decide.
