Mossberg 500 Persuader vs Maverick 88 Security

Hi,

I know this has been covered in the past, but I need to know the bottom line, is the Mossberg worth the extra 100$?. I have a Mossberg 500 field gun and I am happy with it, but now I am interested in a smaller, relatively cheap pump.

I plan to use it for a backwoods bring along gun and just for shooting slugs and what not, maybe for deer but most likely just for fun at the rifle range. I may consider later on adding some tac stuff ,like a stock and what not, but not at the present time.

Safety position is different. Tang on the 500 and a Cross-bolt on the 88 is at the front of the trigger guard like the Winchester 1300.

Parts are interchangeable for the most part, only difference perhaps is that 88 is assembled in Mexico with American parts?

Another difference may be the degree of bluing on the Maverick, it's probably not as good, but will serve its purpose.

Mainly comes down to whether you care if Mossberg is stamped on your receiver or Maverick, and your safety preference. Oh and Mossberg has a 10 year warranty vs. Maverick's 1 year warranty.

I always thought the maverick line was Mexican made parts, but assembled in the USA. So they could claim "built in the USA" but still sell it at relatively cheap price.

Maverick has Mexican made parts put together in Texas.

I would go with the Mossberg over the Maverick ,didn't care for the feel of the action on the Maverick's I tried , I find my Mossbergs smoother.

I have both and have had lots of fun with both of them. I usually bring the maverick out to the bush as my back up. the only complaint i have with either of them is the 500 didnt like fiocchi shells for some reason. each shot I had to take the barrel off and push the empty out with my cleaning rod. what a pain in the a$# that was.

Lots of guns don't like 'em. And i have no idea why. My winnie 1200 absolutely hates them with a passion, getting the action to open afterwards practically requires block and tackle. The same box shot fine from another shotgun?

I don't have an 88, but I've handled one. The action on my 500 seemed way smoother, which was strange because my 500 was new/unfired and the Mav was well used. Should have been the other way around.

The front grip on the Mav seemed really loose. Lots of slop/play from side to side. Don't know if that was a factory defect or from poor maintenance / abuse. Just didn't feel right.

Depends on what you're using it for. I prefer the smaller 500 for a camp gun/predator control, but to each his own. The 590 would work fine for that app, maybe better with the different sights and extra capacity.

Just a thought: Sticking with the 500 means that $200 could go to accessories, like nice Knoxx Spec ops and fore grip. Again, just a thought.

Is regular access to your magazine tube - for cleaning, maintenance, and checking of parts - important to you?

The 590 and the 590A1 both have significantly improved access to the interior of the magazine tube. The 590A1 is also heavier in construction and has more metal parts (vs. plastic parts).

the sights, heavier barrel and speed feed stock is worth the extra $200 and the 590 seems to be smoother again than the 500 my 500 was replaced by a 590 and I have no regrets.oh and there's a bayonet lug on my 590 too.
