Mossberg 500 randomly not firing. Options??

Is 2 out of 50 normal for misfires? I'd like,to think no as none of my rifles have ever misfires.

Nope, all of my 500/590 shotguns have functioned 100% reliably on factory ammo, (unless it's that garbage Winchester Universal which is known to cause extraction issues in almost any shotgun, those all fire though in my shotguns).

I think you have an issue. If it's a newer gun, call Mossberg.

Just got back from the range. I put 10 slugs, and 50 rds of buckshot through the 500.

I had 2 misfires, near the end of my session. 1 misfire was buck shot from challenger (misfired in the past ) and the other was Remington buckshot (also misfire in the past. )

None of the slugs, or my federal bucks or misfired.

For ####s and giggles I also retried 5 misfires from a few, weeks ago. 4 went bang and one didn't (challenger buck)

So.... is this acceptable? Does it look like the 500 is ok, and that it's bad buckshot from challenger?

Short answer... No?

I've shot thousands of rounds of cheap target shells, hundreds of slugs/buck out of a combination of half a dozen shotguns, and only ever one single misfire, if the rounds chambered properly.

I've had failure to feed and failure to eject with semis when they just get too dirty to run, and I've had a pump catch the start of the brass on the feed ramp somewhere and hang up. But if the bolt closes, generally a bang follows.

2 out of 50 is 4%. If it's not a statistical anomaly, and not a crazy coincidence, that's far too much.

Ok so off to. The gunsmith she goes.

Would it be worth paying for, shipping to,the Mossberg warranty place? I was thinking of just paying out of pocket for a local gunsmith but if it could get costly, may as well fix it under warranty.

I'm too Lazy and short on time to read through the whole thread, but mine was acting up for a while. Slide wouldn't release when i pulled the trigger, misfires etc. I took the trigger group out and had a look, there was a spring that slipped off it's hook, when i put it back, cleaned and oiled everything was hunky dorey.

If you're getting primer strikes this advice may be useless but there are plenty of YouTube videos how to get these apart and reassemble. I don't recommend taking the trigger group apart though.

Ok time for an update. I swapped out the stock trigger group for the all metal version, so essentially I replaced the hammer spring. It is noticeably "stiffer" when I rack the slide.

I am happy to report that I fired off 60 rounds of buckshot, various brands, and 20 slugs.

Not a single misfire! I'm pretty confident it was a weak hammer spring at fault.

I've also replaced the hammer, and trigger spring in the original trigger group. I didn't bother trying out as I was happy with the new trigger, and my shoulder was starting to complain after 80 rounds, which came after 50 rounds of 308.

I didn't realize the plastic trigger group in the 500 was 'user serviceable'? Thought it was a 'swap in and out' deal, sold only as a whole unit?

Where in Canada can I buy the all metal version trigger group for the 500? I am interested in getting one but I only found it on Brownells. Does it need an export lic to get one from Brownells?

i just ordered one, finally back in stock. just order it, since it is a Canadian address, the shipping amount is blank, select Parcel Post Priority Mail International. pay for it with your CC, use Amazon Visa, current exchange rates, no up charges. they will email you the total with shipping. if you need any export paperwork, they will email it to your, fill out and return. 75% chance CBSA adds their "because tax of 10$, then adds GST/PST/HST, canada post collects that from you on delivery. 2-3 weeks total.
