Mossberg 500 slide won’t release?

I bought a Mossberg 500 20g from Wanstalls when they had a recent sale. I have 2 identical shotguns plus other Mossbergs in 12g so I’m familiar with the firearms.

This latest one has 2 very annoying quirks. First, it will stovepipe an ejected shell more often than any other shotgun I’ve seen. But much worse is that about 10% of the time the slide release fails to disengage after the trigger is pulled. So the slide is locked up in the forward position and the only way to release it is depressing the slide release.

I took it apart to look for anything obvious but don’t see anything. Has anyone had this happen to them? This shotgun is basically new, probably less than a case of ammo shot through it, all target loads.

I have one in my shop has the same issue I could not wok out what was wrong eaither brand new 20 ga with less then 100 shot
Same issue as u arw having.
Hadctocsend back to the client . And he's going to have mossberg repair center look at it.
I have it a goodcoat of oil as I know it will be sitting for min 6/8 months ...

Only used trap loads so far.

I thought about safety but it shouldn't force the slide release back out I think?

When the trigger is depressed, the gun fires, and the slide release is supposed to pop up and disengage. Thi shappens most of the time, but sometimes it pops up and drops back down, locking the slide.
it's weird

I have a mid 1980's 500A 12 gauge from CT that has done this from day 1. It happens mainly with heavier loads, with birdshot it feeds well.

I had a gunsmith work on it, he replaced the bolt block but it still happens occasionally. It was my field gun but I didn't trust it and replaced it with an HP9-1.

I still have it with 30" and 18.5 barrels but I won't sell it as I can't guarantee it's function.

Oh man I’m an idiot. Laugh2

Took another look at the shotguns and realized I got mixed up and didn’t actually swap trigger groups.

So swapped trigger groups with the old one and sure enough it starts malfunctioning. So the problem is indeed somewhere in the trigger group. Although when I take it out I can’t make it fail just holding it in my hand and cocking/ releasing it.

Hey good evening. Did you ever figure out what this was? I'm having the same issue.

When I pull on the pump even slightly and pull the trigger, the slide release stays engaged and requires me to manually depress the slide release to chamber a new round.

If I flip the gun upside down I can see the bolt slide making contact with the release preventing it from dropping free but I'm not sure if this is expected.

I had a similar issue with an 870. Upon firing and with rearward pressure on the forend ... I could not rack the gun. I had to move the forend slightly forward .... and only then was I able to rack the gun.

For me polishing the action bars and action bar lock solved the problem .....
