I was wondering if anyone has a mossberg 500 Thunder Ranch and could tell me what they think of it and recommend any HD/Tactical mods they have done or seen. I am getting one in about 2 weeks (totally excited as it is my first shotgun) and don't see too much of this model on forums and youtube etc. Thanks for any info!

Not that I own one, but in my limited experience with firearms ownership, I've found that when a manufacturer puts a prolific trainer or training school's name on their guns; you're mostly paying to have that name stamped/engraved/painted on your receiver with the slight added benefit of having some optional features already installed from the factory on your gun. Not saying that the gun will be a bad buy, I just don't think it will be all that much more "special" than a standard Mossberg 500.

Also, hasn't Clint Smith said that he's an 870 guy anyways?

I don't know much about clint smith but I bought the gun because I wanted an 18.5" barrel, tri-rail forend and a short length of pull. Also think it looks cool personally and for $400 cnd not overly pricey. I haven't taken posession yet but got to look at it and it made even more stoked to get it.

The 500 is a proven, dependable, and affordable platform, and the TR version seems to include the elements to make it a viable defensive tool for the home, vehicle, or in the great outdoors. The 37" OAL ensures it will be handy and quick to manipulate. The door knocker choke will protect the muzzle which tends to be a weak link in guns that see hard use. I haven't made my mind up about the front bead from the on line pictures, but CS insists on a high visibility bead, so it would follow that's what is on this gun. A side-saddle might be beneficial if you agree with the logic that you'll fight with the ammo that is either in or on the gun, but a side-saddle doesn't enhance the gun's handling very much. I am a little disappointed that they chose to stick with the 500's standard magazine rather then the 590 threaded cap style, as the latter is easier to maintain. The forend pic rail for a flashlight is both practical and prudent. Without actually seeing one, I'd be inclined to give this gun high marks.

Can't say I've ever laid hands on one but I'm leaning towards grabbing one in the near future. I doubt it will be much different than your standard 500, but the addition of the breaching barrel, upgraded front sight, tri-rail forend and shortened length of pull leaves less work for you when it comes to mods.

I'm debating whether to get the TR edition or a regular cruiser with heat shield, and am leaning towards the TR. I think I'm gonna throw a mesa pistol grip adapter and magpul MOE stock/grip on it. This has to be the nicest 500 build I have seen so far:

Hes got all the magpul goodies on it and it looks awesome!
