Mossberg 500 vs Remington 870?

One of my more ridiculous or incredible experiences while duck hunting with an 870 had a bloop or misfire with a handload in the blind ,wad never cleared there was not a straight stick within a 100 miles of where we were.Banged the barrel trying to shake it out rib came loose and slid it off used that to push the wad out put it back on and limited out ,crazy day but made me a Remington believer :)
 
Mossberg 500 gets my vote. I prefer the controls - tang safety over a cross bolt, and action release behind the trigger guard rather than infront.

I bought a 2- barrel set, 28" vent rib barrel for bird hunting, 18.5" security barrel for bear protection around camp etc.
 
Never had a problem with either, and have had quite a few of each other years.

I also like where the controls are on the 500 better.

Also, this is a bit of a peeve of mine, if the slide of the 870 moves back even a small fraction of an inch, it seems to stop the lil door in the loading gate from functioning, so just not having it was cool lol
 
Older Remingtons are good to go, new ones, not so much. I havent owned a Mossberg yet that I didnt like...500, 590, maverick 88. Mossberg shotguns are very reliable..cant say the same for Mossberg rifles.
 
I went the mossberg route. Owned both and preferred the mossberg tang safety. But the deciding factor was the availability of youth sized guns. I will teach my kids once at 6 how to use a .410 mossberg. Won’t have to teach them anything new on handling the 20 gauge or 12 gauge once they grow into those.

I had the original lakefield mossberg 500 45yrs old and never skipped a beat!Was a bit rattely in the pump but best shotgun i ever shot with!Easy on the shoulder and dead Nutzz everytime!lost it in a fire and missed it eversence
 
Bought the MB 500 combo and still going, barrel change is simple. Rifled, turkey and 20inch jack of all trades. Get a set of chokes and pass it down for next couple of generations. Bomb proof imo.

That’s not my experience. We have about half a dozen of them at the trap range and they give more trouble than all the rest of the club guns combined (1100s, 870s, Brownings, etc.) The 20s seem ok but the 12s are constantly plagued with problems. Failure to fire, light primer hits, etc. I see more trouble with these than even the cheap Turkish guns.
 
I prefer the 870 just because I have more experience on the 870s. I have a newer model express That I upgraded the internals on (wingmaster bolt, police dog carrier, volquartsen extractor etc) Never had any issues with rust and it’s been through the ringer a fair bit.

Planning to get a 590 at some point though
 
Take a Mosberg apart and then take an 870 apart. Fixed twin action bars on the 870 pump are just a better mouse trap

Edit - I was confusing the mosberg twin action bars with that of another shotgun. The twin action bars are indeed fixed to the pump upon disassembly. Regardless I’ll still take an 870 any day of the week.

My second gun was a sp magnum 870… ive since bought 4 more
They are perfect pump action shotgun in my eyes !
Sorry, no love for mossberg and their aluminum reciever .. not for me
Also dislike the safety on the 500

There are big followings for both 500 and 870 …. You just have to sit down with both and see which you like best !
