I'm just wondering what everyone thinks of the Mossberg 535 pump (3-1/2" 12 Ga). Looking to buy my first shotgun so don't want to break the bank and these seem to be from what I've heard a good all around gun at a reasonable price.

Thoughts?

Note, I'd ideally like one gun that I can use for Turkey, Skeet and possibly chickens.

I like mine just fine for hunting, but slugs from the field barrel can be a problem because the elevation on the sights bottoms out. Also, the front sights on the turkey barrel tends to break easily, both me and my brother have broken ours, but Mossberg sends replacements no questions asked.

Other than that, I got my 3 barrel combo for $500, a more than decent price and excellent value for what you get (3 barrels, 4 chokes, full camo finish, 2 3/4 to 3 1/2 inch shells, etc)

I got the 535 3 barrel combo as well, and it seems to do fine, everytime I pull the trigger she goes bang, what else can you ask for.... good gun for the price...

I bought that tactical turkey 535 and love it. For me it feels smoother and faster cycling then both my 870's. There are only two problems I find with it, one is the forend rattles a little and makes a little to much noise for me and it shoots slugs about a foot high at a hundred yards.

I've been shooting my 535 for 3 seasons now for everything from ducks/geese/turkey, skeet and deer/bear. It handles the 3 1/2 with no problems. I shoot with a scope on the gun when using the slug barrel and feed Rem. Copper Solids thru it for deadly accuracy and great performance. I've taken deer out to 125yrds. With a scope this gun shoots slugs awsome.
For the price you just can't beat it.

I would say go for it. Mine has been great, apart from a problem that seems to be fairly common. When cycling it was dropping about 1 in 3 shells cycled on to the ground. So I would recommend cycling a whole bunch of dummy shells through it before you buy. The fix was easy for me as I live quite close to one of the "official factory repair centers" aka ye old local gun store/smith here in ON. He swapped out the shell stop interrupter (as I recall) and one other part, which fixed the problem. Yes, the sights on the turkey barrel leave a lot to be desired, as mentioned. I would budget around $60 for some better fibre optic rifle sights that will work a lot better, have more adjustability an be more durable. That said, I have been using mine a lot and they have been fine and I got it zeroed in great for turkey. I don't use my turkey barrel for slugs as I have the 3 barrel combo (one of these is of course a rifled cantilever slug barrel).

As freddyfour points out, the forend rattles. Refined is not how I would describe this shotgun. But it works very well and is very reliable. One word of caution about it that you may or may not be aware of is how light they are. The frames are made of aluminum. All in all I see this as a positive as most of us are out there hunting with them and it is a lot nicer to carry than an equivalent 12 gauge with a steel receiver. The trade off is significantly increased recoil.

Yes I would have to agree with that. I changed out the factory recoil pad for one with a little more cushion. Easy fix.

Thanks for the posts everyone. Think I'll have to go pick one up soon!

And as for the recoil....not too concerned....for spring tukey season I used a friends 500, with an aftermarket stock (hollow metal, took about 2 pounds off the total weight). Plus, heavy recoil makes me feel tough. haha.

the 535 is a great shot gun for the money .i have been shooting mine for a few years now without a singel problem .she has slane many turkeys and a few deer as well .the sights that come on the gun are not very good i lost my front one the second day of turkey season .put a red dot on her for turkeys and you can get the most out of your pattern with full adjustment .i just love 535 becoues it can take the work the mud cold and everything els i can throw ar her DUTCH

I have the Mossberg 535 now for about a year and I have a deluxe Remington 870 Wingmaster, I have tell you I find the Mossberg much nicers to shoot than the Wingmaster, seems to be smoother.
