hi guys im thinking about getting a new shotgun. i really love that the mossber has a byonet on it!! but i really like the 870 also. pleas help me decide thanks!

What will you be using it for? Something to consider - if it is going to be a shotgun you will be taking camping or hiking, I would say get the 870 since you can get one with a 12.5 inch barrel, whereas the mossberg has a longer barrel - I've never seen one with a barrel shorter than 18 inches.

maybe a littlebit of deer huntoing and bear defence, but mostly gunt to play around with.

Mossberg has the slide release in a better spot as well as the safety. It has dual extractors opposed to the single claw on the Remington. Loading a mossberg is a little faster too.

I like loading a mossberg better since the lifter dosnt get caught on gloves and finger like the remmy but other then that i like the 870 better if you want to hunt deer with it look into the 870 combo.

I have both...well actually I just sold my 870. It's a good shotgun but for me being a Lefty the tang safety and slide release are in a much better location on the Mossberg. the 590 is a tank and can probably be run over by one and survive. LOL

I really like my 590A1, I had both. THe 870 felt like it had a smoother pump.

Too hard to choose, I just ended up buying both.

I love my mossberg 500(same setup as 590). It is just a better design. Less after market then 870's. Meh. The 590 is a beast too. Run out of ammo and beat whatever to death with it. Oh also badboybeeson sells bayonet lugs for 870's if you want to go that route. A very practical addition to any shotgun.

I do not own either of these and am in the same boat as you. I want the 590 or the 870 and both seem fairly popular.

What I can say is after quite a bit of research looking in the for sale threads that there are not any people selling there 590's. A few selling their 870's or even wanting to trade their 870's for a 590.

That should say something right there. That is what is swaying me to Mossberg.

I have both and would go for the 870 only because of the much shorter barrel available (making it much more "fun" to use). Otherwise they're both very good.

funny you should say that...... I ran over a Mossy Ulti-mag (835??)with my 4 runner once.It was Timex like -took a lickin' and kept on tickin.Still felt like a cheap piece of crap (ulti-mag), but the 590 A1 has me all hot and bothered nonetheless. It just feels like a good shotgun. And I'm an 870 guy usually.

Having owned both and being left handed, they're both good. Mossberg controls are more lefty friendly, but 870 controls are fine once you practice with it. Mossberg is easier to load, dual extractors may be better, but the 870 extractor is big and strong (at least the machined one on my WM). 870 doesn't rattle as much as the 500. 870 is easier to take apart, 500 not much harder.

I think both have their roles, I keep the 500 for hunting/clays and the 870 for hiking/multipurpose/clays. 500 wears a 28'' accu-choke, 870 18.5''. that way they can't argue about who's better since they have their own niche :)

I also own both a Mossy 500 and an Rem. 870. In my opinion the 870 is made way better and I find the action smoother and feels a lot more solid than the 500. I just prefer the break down of the 870 and it is way friendlier to use with any pistol grip stock due to the safety location.
