How is the quality of them, function, etc?
Will be purchasing soon and can't decided between the Rem 870 Marine or one of the Mossberg models.

Mine has been flawless, no failures or malfunctions. It shoots slugs accurately and is heavyenough to soak up the recoil. The ghostring sights are first rate and easy to adjust. I would buy another in a heartbeat.

+1

Only trouble with mine was that there was some flux? leftover (under the front sight) from the brazing process that I didn't notice while cleaning the gun for the first time. Took it to the range, and after shooting a bunch of slugs, the heat from the barrel melted the flux. It ran out from a pin-hole in the brazing and left some marks in the park'ized barrel.

I got the parkerized model - does all I'd expect a short barrel shotgun to do. By the way - although the general appearance of the lower priced security shotguns offered by Mossberg and Maverick appear to be the similar - the 590 is leaps and bounds ahead. I wouldn't trade mine for an 870.

The 590 A1 is an awesome shotgun. You'd get your money's worth. Used 3 inch slugs and the heaviness of the 590 absorbed most of the felt recoil. Same time in the range, I also put in a few buckshot, hardly felt the recoil on that as well.

Do you guys have the 18.5 or 20 inch barrels?
The reason I ask is I have read the 590a1 with the 20 inch barrel is a heavy sucker!

Any thoughts?

A couple points to consider about the Mossberg 590 A1's is there are no longer barrels for birds available. Not a problem if you're lookin for a slug gun but not as adaptable as the 870 Marine Magnum. I like the action release location as well but it moves the trigger further forward then the 870 for a different trigger feeling.... You should handle them both if you can I was in your position a couple of years ago and bought an 18 1/2" 590A1 that's been great but I also just bought a used wingmaster this year so I could get into the skeet/trap thing at the local range. I think you can't really go wrong with a 590A1 or the marine magnum.

Thanks for all the feedback people.
I have owned several Rem 870 models in the past, but never a Mossberg model.
I think from all the replys here ,I may be leaning in the direction of the Mossberg 590-A1.
I am thinking about the 20" version with the heavy walled barrel, heat sheild and bead front sight.

Very interesting read from all you guys.... Because i am also thinking of buying a the 590A1 myself. This will be my first shot gun purchase. Anyhow the model i am getting includes: 20" Heavy Wall Barrel | Speed Feed Stock | Metal Trigger Guard and Safety. I just wanted to ask is $693 seems sort of pricey? becuase i have read in other forums ,albiet a U.S. forum that mossberg should be a lot cheaper the Remingtons, but looking at the Vancouver, BC store i am goign to purchase from the 590a1 model is more $ then the 870 Remington that was my other optional purchase. Another question, sorry guys VERY new to the shotgun world, can the Mossberg 590a1 shoot SABOT slug rounds?

Thanks for the great link Can Down.... i am new to the board and found this place a great help... Anyhow have any of u guys ordered from here? I have never purchased a firearm from the internet ... how is this Whole Sale Outtfiiters place? They have great prices btw would save me at least $200 if i bought my mossy from them

Well I have a 590A1 with GR sights and a 20" barrel, I put a side saddle and a buttler creek folding stock on mine. I love this shot gun. Had a whinchester 1300 defender ,it was all right if you like a plastic trigger group on your shotgun, ( POS ) I would not ever consider getting rid of it, its one slick machine.
