And? I’m not sure what your point is?

First, some RCMP webpage doesn’t trump the Criminal Code, second they clearly state in your own quote:

I already pointed out how adapting a shotgun or any other alteration, and that, as so adapted, is less than 660 mm in length makes it prohibited.

First, it’s against the forum rules to discuss illegal activity, or at least it used to be (I can’t find the “rules” since the update).

Listen, all I’m trying to do is educate those that may not know. They should at least be aware of the risks, no? I didn’t scream and rant about offences or minimums like you’re implying, just quoted from the Criminal Code so people know.

People will do what they want, but I have to assume that those who openly talking about it, and certainly those that post pictures of shotguns they claim are theirs, have no idea that they’ve created a prohib firearm. Easy enough to correct once informed, or just shut up and keep a low(er) profile.

I also understood where you're coming from. I was of the understanding that with a 14" barrel, it's still non-restricted with pistol or birdshead grip? Change that to 12" or 8" barrel, and one may inadvertently be wading onto restricted or prohibited territory without putting a propper butt stock on.

My personal belief is that the 12 ga loses so much power out of a barrel any shorter than 14 inches, you're just going to wound whatever you're shooting. Even a 14 inch barrel would be questionable (unethical) outside of 20 yards or so I would think? I've heard that 18" is the goldilocks length for the cartridge (shortest barrel with the least amount of power compromise). I imagine things change with 3" and 3.5" magnum shells? For those cartridges, maybe a 12" barrel is just as effective at 50 yards as a 2.75" shell out of an 18" barrel? Idk.

C.C.C. 84(1)b refers to criminally altering the barrel [by name] of a firearm to make it shorter not using a factory short barrel.

prohibited firearm means
  • (b) a firearm that is adapted from a rifle or shotgun, whether by sawing, cutting or any other alteration, and that, as so adapted,
    • (i) is less than 660 mm in length, or
    • (ii) is 660 mm or greater in length and has a barrel less than 457 mm in length,


C.C.C. 84(1) also states that the stock of a firearm can change the length of a firearm to under 26 inches as long as that firearm is "Not" prohibited to start , as in non-restricted and this will change its classification as prescribed by law.

restricted firearm means

  • (a) a handgun that is not a prohibited firearm,
  • (b) a firearm that
    • (i) is not a prohibited firearm,
    • (ii) has a barrel less than 470 mm in length, and
    • (iii) is capable of discharging centre-fire ammunition in a semi-automatic manner,

You know what? I believe that I may be mistaken and that you’re correct. My apologies.

I just remember way back when Dlask first released their 8.5” shorties with pistol grip (2007?) as non-restricted and the RCMP eventually reclassified them. I thought they classified them as prohib but my memory appears to have failed me.

Shotguns really don't lose out on much velocity with shorter barrels.

We're talking like 15 fps per inch.



My 14.5" 590A1 is extremely deadly to coyotes and steel targets out to at least 100 meters.

I would double check any 14” shotgun with a pistol grip. Bird head grips will keep it over 26” but most pistol grips will be under 26”. That’s why I mentioned it to begin with. I was wrong about it becoming prohib, but it would need to be registered as restricted if one intends to keep it that way.

No, I didn’t miss that, I was not referring to you, or anyone in particular. Plenty of examples on here over the years, including one at the start of this thread.

I already explained why I said something, to educate those that may be unaware, at the time I also thought it made it prohibited. I’ve admitted my error and learned something myself. Is that not the main point of the forum? To share our knowledge?

Who’s trying to police who here? If you don’t care for my comments you’re free to ignore them.
