Mossberg 590 problem

I have a friend who has this shotgun, it was bought brand new last month. He went out and shot it with some 2 3/4" trap loads and was having extraction problems. He tried some 3" steel loads and same problem. Mossberg's warranty gunsmith has been contacted and he said to send it in.

Just wondering if anybody else has this shotgun or a similar Mossberg and has experienced any problems with shell extraction?

Could likely be the ammo.

I've shot some 870's that hate the cheap "well not so cheap these day's" 100 round boxes of federal or winchester trap loads.

Could be that? Has your friend tried using any good stuff in it?

I know, not the same gun, but I have had similar problems that your friend experiences.

EDIT:

Ok so I see he also tried some 3" loads, so that likely rules out the cheap ammo problem. Could be that the chamber needs to be cleaned up a bit.

My 590 worked flawlessly from new, and the same goes for a couple of Maverick 88's that were bought by guys at work. With the thousands of these guns being produced there is bound to be a problem once in a while I guess. Perhaps the the problem is the recesses cut in the bolt or the barrel for the extractors, preventing them from moving properly.
 
Only ever had one mechanical with one of my Mossy's. My 500 Persuader would loosen the end cap while shooting. My 590a1 has never had any issues, it has had a few thousand rounds through it, from cheapo bid shot, low recoil slugs and 00 buck to 3" magnum rounds. Had a hard extraction twice with cheapo rounds and that is it. But I wonder if one of the extractor profiles is off a bit.
 
My 500A, bought back in 1985 had failure to extract problems from day 1. I took it to my gunsmith who improved it so that it didn't fail to extract with birdshot but it still jams 1 out of 8 with heavy loads.

I've retired it and just keep it around for launching non-lethal ammo like bangers etc. and have 100% reliable guns for the serious work.
 
I just took this shotgun out for a test, firing three different types of ammo

Federal top gun 2 3/4" #7.5 trap loads cycle fine, I even loaded the tube up with 8 rounds and fired them off in rapid fire and had no issues ejecting the fired shell

Federal 2 3/4" buckshot seized the action up solid after each of the five shots. only way to open it was to tap the butt on something solid while holding the front grip :(

Winchester 2 3/4" 1 oz slugs were great for the first 4 shots, ejection was fine. the fifth one seized it up! frustrating..

this gun will be going back to Mossberg's warranty
 
Sounds similar to the problem some guys have had with the 870 "super mags". I think that the issue with those was supposed to be a rough cut chamber, quite likey the same with your buddy's Mossberg. Polishing the chamber is supposed to do the trick, but since its new, I'd send it back as well.
 
I have never had a problem with any loads from my 500 field. From light trap bulk packs through 3" heavy buckshot it shucks them all no problem. I have probably put at least 1000rds through mine in the last four years.
 
shotgun is back from Mossberg warranty, they recut and polished chamber and test fired w/ 8 rounds of 2.75" & 3"

we'll see if it works
 
I have seen this problem on a couple of mossbergs, and my fix was to give some extra tightening on the round nut at the end of the magazine, when putting the gun back together.it's almost like there should be another 1/4" of thread travel to keep things tight with finger pressure.a pair of channel locks and something to protect the gun metal works fine.
 
I had the very same problems. After playing with the action and polishing I found out the problem lies in the trigger group.

There is a pin that floats left and right on the trigger group itself. If this pin shifts to far left or right it get into the channel for the action bars and blocks rearward movement.

When it jams pull off the trigger group and see if the issue is the pin. It will be over to one side or the other.

Haven't had a problem since I roughed up the pin ends and trigger group pin hole with a little sand paper. Just a couple of strokes on both sides is all and make sure it is clean of lube/oil before hand.

did your friend give it a good cleaning before he shot it because they put a lubricant in the barrel that keeps the chamber from rusting while it is in transit from factory to customer and sometimes that can cause the ejectors to fail leaving the empty in the chamber
