Mossberg 590 Shockwave's longer barrel?

The one thing about the Mossberg 590 Shockwave that I don't understand is why does the Shockwave have a 14-3/8" (14.375") barrel instead of the standard 14" barrel that comes with the 590A1 Class III Law Enforcement model? Is the extra 3/8" needed in the US to take it from a class III firearm to AOW? I can't see why else they would make a whole separate barrel for these.

Not a huge deal, just seems odd to me...

Possibly. Does the 26” OAL matter in the States? Mossberg lists the OAL For the shockwave with 14.375” barrel as 26.375” so it should be exactly 26” with a 14” barrel. Hmmm...

Did you measure a 14" LE model ?

I'll measure my 14" kit from mossberg.

It is a bit longer, I compared my 14" to my shockwave. That's ok, it gets it past the 26" length issues...

My 590a1 with factory 14” barrel and the Raptor grip is 26.25” OAL. Not sure why they’d need that longer barrel.

For reference my 870P with factory Remington 14” mod barrel and Raptor grip is 26.5” OAL.

It surely has to do with overall length requirements ....

When i build my Tac-14 with a 14" barrel .... my build was just barely longer than 26" ... and I mean 2 to 3 millimeters.
And I did not want to take chances .... because depending of how you measure overall length .... well ....

So I added a spacer/sling attachment between the stock and receiver ....

I'll measure my 14" kit from mossberg.

I’m going off the pictures (notice the distance from the lug to th end of the barrel) and the specs on Mossberg’s website.

It surely has to do with overall length requirements ....

My only thought there is that Mossberg made this with the US market and the AOW classification in mind, they didn’t make them for our small market. So the 14.375” barrel must somehow be related to that.... but then again, maybe they had us in mind all along.

The Shockwave and Tac-14 were developed/designed for the US market!

The whole Canadian 26" overall length requirement was copied from US laws.

Thanks for posting this I was wondering that myself. Just from the photos it always looked longer to me than my original 14" modified choke barrel.

Here's some pics of a Mossberg 14" barrel kit barrel and a 590 SPX shockwave heat shield barrel for comparison. Yup it is 3/8" longer.
FWIW the heat shield on the 14" SPX is tack welded on and is non removable, but looks awesome!
