I got my Late season Cow Elk Tag for 212 (Alberta) and was wondering if anyone here has any experience with the Mossberg 590 and slugs? I know slugs can be pretty particular, so I would rather be pointed in a general direction than buy 15 different boxes just to see which one works best!!! I'm tough, but not that tough!!!

I've searched on here, and found all sorts of suggestions, but hopefully I can get some shoulder saving information!!!

The 590 has ghost ring sights, 20" barrel with a cylinder bore, no choke.

Thanks in advance!

Joe

I also own a 590 with ghost ring and 20'' barrel. I have tried a few different slugs at the 100yds line, and these are the ones that seemed to have less drop. They are rifled so it helps

Btw i find these kind of unpleasant to shoot

EDIT : link is broken for some odd reason, the are winchester xtreme, 3'' magnum, 1oz rifled slug
Myself had bought them at canadian tire, but at the ammo source the price looks better (before shipping of course)

Those are my favourite in my 590A1, they are kind of unpleasant though.

I carry 600 gr Brennekes almost exclusively in my 590. I'm not worried about accuracy because my intended targets are just a few feet off the muzzle, but from prone, palm sized groups are typical when I'm confirming the 50 yard zero. Not surprisingly, the Brenneke's terminal effects trump what is normally expected from fosters. If accuracy was my primary concern, I found 2.75" 1 oz Winchesters grouped the best at 100 from a number of different guns.

3 Brenneke compared to a foster

1 or 2 is quite fine, but i wouldnt be shooting boxes of these.
The power is quite impressive tough!

I took 10 boxes of the 3" Magnum Slugs to Silverdale the other week. Was popping the 200yrd gong 3-4 out of 5.

Shoulder was friggen killing me for a few days though.

Here's a pick of me shooting one off at dusk up north:

200yards, 3-4 out of 5 times?

I could pull that off sitting with a scoped AR... shotgun though?? Very impressive.

With a modified choke, I got a nice group at a 100m using the Winchester 2-3/4 slugs as posted above. Very accurate, 8" group.
