I got a deal on a 590 but comes with just pistol grip. I am going to get a Knoxx RR pistol grip shoulder stock, or a compstock KNoxx unit. Is the safety ok to reach from the low ready for IPSC using the pistol grip should stock unit,...or should I go with the traditional style compstock Knoxx unit?

I find the traditional style/compstock is the best feel for me. I think its from years of shooting shotguns with standard stocks. I find my thumb is right there for the safety. I just don't like the feel of the pistol grip on a shotgun and the safety is just more unnatural (reaching up and back). Looks great but feels weird. I can bring my speedfeed stock 590a1 to the next match if you want to try it out.

I don't do any competitive shooting, but I can tell you from firsthand experience that the Mossberg tang safety is a ##### to operate in a hurry with a PG. That being said you may not mind it. I use the stock stock chopped down an inch or two.

Mo, listen what Storm just said. But if you still want to get a shoulder stock with pistol grip, I have one to sell. :D

Mossberg and Pistol grips are a terrible combo...........

+1

The Hogue overmold stock is something you might want to look at. Traditional lines which will make operating the tang safety very easy and the shorter LOP of the stock will be a much more comfortable fit. This coming from a guy who does have relatively long arms. I find the original stock for the 590 to be a bit long, really have to reach to keep my hand on the forearm.

I think I am leaning towards the Knoxx compstock or hogue,..anyone have suggestions as to who might have them in stock...(I really hate waiting,.one inquiry was vague as to delivery time ...3-6 weeks)

And I'm one more that hates pistol grips on "practical" shotguns. They get in the way of loading and maneuvering.

done deal. Thanks
MO

Btw, I think knoxx will put you into open division if you ever wanted to shoot ipsc with it. No recoil compensating devices are allowed in standard manual.

Sean, why pistol grip would get into the way if you reloading weak hand?

You thought wrong........
It was covered on GV last year.

Oh wait..........you were banned from that forum for no good reason. From a forum that you help pay for and yet are thus are not aware of decisions that could effect your sporting chances.

Eh? Current rules, appndix d5.22 - external modifications such as weight and dwvices to control or reduce recoil are specifically not allowed.

So, in that case it should be also legal to fill in the butstock with led, right? As long as you stuff that extra weight somewhere inside of the gun...

I like to flip my mossy over, (holding the heat shield with my weak hand) drop the rounds in, (taking advantage of the lack of loading gate) then flick them into the tube with my strong hand thumb. It's much easier without this post (the pistol grip) getting in the way as it gets rotated back and forth.

I would like to see that....I say go for it.:stirthepot2:LOL

I've seen lead bars made in the exact shape of the cleaning kit cavity of the stock of an AR-15. Apparently common in National Match Rifle Competition in the USA. Wouldn't want to have to do any dynamic shooting with it, though.
