Hey Nutz,

A couple of questions about my new purchase...

- Is there a difference between the 590 and the 590A1? I just bought a used one from Williams Arms in Ontario (online, didn't see it in person), it was advertised as a 590A1 but the markings only read 590 (no 'A1').

- Is the foregrip/pump supposed to be so loose?

Thanks.

Paul

The 590A1 has a metal trigger group/guard and a heavier barrel to meet military specifications. Otherwise they are identical I believe. The forearm on mine is a little loose but not tremendously so.

This one appears to have a metal trigger guard, and it has a bayonet lug, so I assume it's an A1 model, but there are no markings indicating it. Maybe it's an older one.

Is the safety metal as well? The foreend's are looser then an 870..
Your barrel might not be as heavy but that's probably a good thing.

If it was advertised as a 590A1 it should be marked 590A1.

The safety does appear to be metal and the bbl is about twice as thick as my 870, but no 'A1' markings on it anywhere.

It does have a side saddle covering the entire left side of the receiver, so I can't see anything there. But the markings on the bottom of the receiver just ahead of the breech, and the ones on the barrel both read just 590, with no 'A1'.

By the way 7.62, good job on being 9 months smoke free. I just passed the 2 year mark and I've never felt better.

Thanks, and congrats yourself! I feel a lot better as well! You don't really notice how much it affects you, until you stop!

Mine has the same markings, I am sure if you pull the side saddle, it will have 590A1 in big letters on it!

Should be marked 590 in small script on the underside loading area and 590 A1 in large script on the side under the saddle. If you have a thick wall barrel with a metal trigger group, that's the signs of a 590 A1.

QFT

this is 100% correct.

On the other hand, the 590A1SPX model comes with Ghost ring rear sight, fiber optic front sight, ported barrel and an Ontario M-9 bayonet.

the forearm is a little loose, but not enough to warrent concern. I think it is done purposely so, as tighter tolerences would be less forgiving than looser ones. Never forget, that this is a military shotgun (Specifically the A1 model). It is meant to take abuse and keep on kicking.

This is towards pretty much everyone in this thread, not only Donster. All Mossberg shotguns have a loose forearm, it's part of the design. Open the action, you'll see the forearm will have no slack. It's the design of the forearm meeting with the barrel that gets thicker near the chamber.

Second, Mossberg's tolerances are the same as every other shotgun manufacturer for standard hunting or military type guns. What changes is the CLEARANCE SPACE. Mossbergs allow a bit more clearance between the parts so it runs dirty and hot, but it won't "feel" as good.

Tolerance is NOT clearance space.

Last, the Mossberg 590A1 should have an anodized finish, a thick, cylinder bore 20" barrel, 8+1 shot capacity, metal trigger and safety assembly and ghost rings. If it has these things, you have yourself a 590A1. It's a fine shotgun, I wouldn't part with mine.

Thanks Nutz. Sounds like I do have an A1 model, but I'll remove the side saddle and see the markings when the original pins get here, just to be sure. It has a rear ghost ring and a front red ramp site, 8+1 mag and a bayonet lug, but no bbl porting. I haven't shot it yet but I'm quickly getting to like the feel of it. I find it more comfortable and faster to cycle than my 870.
