I have a Mossberg 590A1 with the 20" barrel that holds 9+1. I purchased a +2 mag extension from S&J naturally expecting I would be able to load 11+1. Trouble is, I can only load 10+1 so my +2 actually only netted me a +1 (2 3/4" shells of course)

Any of you guys running a 20" 590 with the +2 actually able to get 11+1 in there?

You might need to cut the spring or look at the follower your using. I know One top shooter who's +2 works just fine. My +1 makes an extra 2 3/4" very tough to get in and i'm sure a slighlty oversize 2 3/4" larger shell wouldn't go.

Cut the mag tube spring alittle at a time until you get your +2 rounds. Did it for my 590A1 18.5'' with no feeding problems at all.

Thanks guys. I think I will try trimming the spring but I'm best to wait until after this weekend's 3-gun in case I mess it up and have to order a replacement.

I think your math might be off buddy, I re read your post and the 590A1 can only fit 8+1, not 9+1, even with a +2 you should only be able to get 10+1. I'd hold off on cutting those springs.

I think you are right! Where the hell did I get 9+1 from? Oh well, 8+1, 10+1, 50+1...reloading speed and accuracy will be what holds me back for a while yet, not capacity so much!

Find the way to reload the smoothest even if it is the slowest. I found strong hand reloading where I rotate the gun into my weak hand to be the smoothest for me, works for Karl and he seems to win everything.

Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

Watch some Magpul Shotgun vids on loading and the Gunsight Shotgun class vid on Youtube.

Keep the gun shouldered, and grasp 4 shells with your weak hand. Slide them into the mag tube while keeping your eyes trained on target. Use your thumb and index and pinky fingers to push and guide respectively into the tube. Remember, combat reload often if you don't have time to do a full top off. And top off whenever possible if you have a round in the chamber.

Man I was all screwed up! Here is the real deal:
My 20" mossberg 590 is 8+1 for a total load of 9...I added an S&J +2 so I should be able to load a total of 11 shells right? Well I can only fit 10 (1 in the chamber and 9 in the mag). So again my +2 is really only a +1 :(
Is anyone here running the same setup and can you get 11 in?

But I can only fit 9 in the magtube.

So again my +2 ext is really only a +1

Okay, stop saying 9+1 and 10+1 and 8+1....

Everyone here knows that when you put one in the chamber you get +1. No need to keep saying it over and over.

You're confusing he s**t out of everyone.

Here's the deal.

You went from 8 in the mag to 9 in the mag. Period. No plus one BS.

Okay...

So your problem here is the length of the magtube spring and maybe the dimensional difference between your original follower and the new follower that came with your extension. You're going to have to begin trimming the spring, always checking for a positive final round feed. Trim too short, and the last round in the tube won't feed reliably.

Follower is the same so no difference there. What I would like to know is if anyone has got 10 in the tube. Before I start cutting the spring I'd like confirmation that with the 20" barrel, my extension will in fact give me +2...after I purchased it, Simon (S&J) told me that the extension was made for the 18.5" barrel so I'd rather not cut the spring if 10 can't be done.

Order a second spring from Simon now. They are cheap as dirt. Then you can experiment, snipping one piece at a time, until your 10th round fits.

Also, and this is important, how far into the tube can you insert the 10th round? Not at all? 50%, 75%, 90%? This will really determine if spring cutting will be feasible. If 90%, feasible. If >50%, you might have issues...

That is the thing Greg, I can only get that last round about 60% in so that is about an inch of compressed spring to lop off...doesn't look good.
