Hello everyone just bought myself a new Mossberg blackwater edition! Very excited over this as it is my first shotgun ever. With that said I have a few questions, I mainly bought this as a bear defence gun for the cabin but lately been even thinking of trying some skeet with it. So question is do I need to get the barrel threaded to put chokes in? Or am I able to shoot skeet w/o the chokes. Yes I know there are probably much better shotguns for this but id prefer to keep it to one gun plus I love the look of the 590A1.
Also I'm a little concerned over rails on the forearm tearing up the hands. Any good attachments or replacements you guys could recommend?

If the forend is too hard on your hand, you could try the Hogue overmolded forearm. If you prefer to keep your original forend, you may want to look at the AVGs, I have never used them but some people like them and they have that tacticool look.

if it's just for fun, I say have a go and see how you do. IIRC the barrel is ported which makes fitting of chokes difficult but if you're just out with buddies throwing clays, it should work. I plan on taking my 14" barrel beauty out to the range and see how I do with that. :)

Great first SG!
I have the 20" with XS GRS and really enjoy mine. I've had a few other SG's in the past but this is one of my fav's and you get a lot for the $$.
I found the accessory rail on the fore-grip kept jambing my thumb on re-coil. So off they came when I got home.
I'm considering getting the Hogue fore & butt-stock kit. I'm not a fan of speed-feed stocks.

Once you get used to shooting skeet using ghost ring sights it's pretty fun but if you want to compete forget it. My 590A1 came with a tri rail forend and I hated it, the side rails kept hitting my thumb to so I swaped it for a standard issue forend.

My 590A1 has bead sights, which are awesome, and I've shot clays with it a few times. Probably a lot better guns for it, but it worked fine for my wife, my grandfather, and myself, and we had a great time!

I've shot trap with 14" barrel and ghost rings. It's fun. It takes some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it it's not much of a handicap. You ain't gonna win any matches but who cares, it's a blast. Besides, those snooty types need to see what real shotguns look like now and then
