Mossberg 590A1 or Remington 870 Express for 3 gun?

Hi Folks,
need to make up my mind on a shotgun so I can "add to cart - checkout" quickly if either of those shotguns become available again.
The Mossy holds 9 to the Remi's 7. I believe the Remi can use diff chokes - Mossy not. The remi safety would work better if converting to a pistol grip down the road.
Thoughts folk?

The 870 is much easier to modify. For example, you can buy magazine extension tubes that will add up to 10 extra rounds whereas with the mossberg you're stuck with what you got.

There has been some QC issues with Remington but new ones should be good. I'd recommend an older wingmaster if possible. Buy a used one for $300, and then kit it out exactly how you like. Dlask has barrels with chokes for the 870 for pretty cheap.

All that being said, the benelli nova is hands down the most popular pump shotgun for competition (most likely for a reason). Pretty much every IPSC pump shotgun competitor runs one. Benelli is coming out with a new model shortly that looks very nice.

I had my 590 threaded for chokes and it has proven itself a solid option.

This is incorrect. Perhaps you are thinking of the mossberg 500. The mossberg 590 accommodates extension tubes.

I have limited experience with Mossberg 500/590 and a lot with the 870 platform bit I wouldn’t hesitate to pick the first available in the current situation we’re in.

Both guns have great aftermarket support but I always felt that the 870 had a little bit more aftermarket stuff but it is completely subjective and it could be that when you own a 870 you don’t shop for 590 parts.

I could be wrong, I remember reading about it, ejector on a Mossberg changes easier than with Remington (for most of us it’s a gunsmith thing)

I used a Blackwater 590a1 for 3 gun. Had the barrel threaded for chokes (Tactical Ordnance) and added a plus one to the mag tube. Both the 870 and 590 are solid , proven guns and are good choices. Remington stuff will likely be more plentiful and cheaper to find but I found the Mossberg a breeze to reload and a better platform in my opinion.

100% agree on the above statement. Much easier to load with no shell lifter to catch on fingers and your glove etc. The safety is easier to get to also. Try both and see what feels best for you. You will see more 870s buy try a 590a1 and there will be no looking back. My 2 cents

I'm of the opinion that it comes down to your setup more than anything else, as both offerings are more than capable of what we, on civvie street, will ask of them. If you're planning to run a pistol grip on the gun, buy a Remington due to position of the safety and lock release. If you're running a conventional stock, go with the mossy, again because of the position of the safety and lock release. Besides the contemporary manufacturing hiccups that Remington has suffered, both the Mossberg and Remington are good to go.

The 590a1 with ghost sights and the inserts in the stock for 2 more shells on each side is a beast to behold.....Loved it online in the pictures and will have to have it pried out of my hands its the shotgun I would want if I only were to ever have 1 again. The sights are great and first time out with slugs at 100m I was shooting 3 inch groups or better with an awesome zipping sound as the shells left the barrel.

Just reading about the Remington bankruptcy, re-org, and labour troubles with the union while trying to get the plant up and running this month. While the 870 pump action is the first gun to get going on again, not sure when it will materialize. If you can't make it in this market of demand outstripping supply.....

That being said...don't see any 590A1's available to purchase either.

Why not both?
I like them each for different reasons and different configurations. Make sure to compare apples to apples though, Police/Wingmaster - 590A1.

Ouf. Pistol grip on a shotgun?

I only ask because those who have never shot one with a pistol grip think it's a good idea until you get one and then you realize why they're not popular

A 870 base will be $4-500, with a long 26-30" barrel that can accept chokes, good if you want it to do anything and everything like ducks and skeet.

If you want a shorter barrel go with Mossberg as 870 models cost a lot more than the equivalent through Remington.
You can get a Mossberg 590 with a short barrel, longer tube and even ghost rings for under 700 while a Remington "Defender" starts at 789 plus tax...

So short barrel (20 and under) go with Moss, if you want a 26-30" duck gun that you customize to your perfect gun then go Remington.

the most important is the fitting. rem 870 fits me well not so the mossberg 500-590 so not only the fitting but all you want to put on it but no way to compare a regular with 590a1 better start with wingmaster or police magnum ...

Having had about a dozen Remington 870s in different configurations for the last 12 years I've stuck with the 590A1 for matches and courses. I've used the 870 for work and would take a 590A1 any day of the week over one. There's about 10 pros over the 870s: better safety selector location, easier to load, heavier duty design, dual extractors, etc. I saw a 20" 590A1 with ghost rings for $800 from a retailer here and that's a good deal.

Does this retailer ship?

I just saw a 590 Tactical Mlok.

Thoughts folks....if the A1 is not available anytime soon?
Not as rugged. No bayonet lug. But what caught my eye was removable chokes Accu choke system.
It has ghost ring sights...can I assume the receiver is tapped for a picatinny rail at a later date too then?
