Mossberg 590A1 Receiver Damage

Hello all,

This last Saturday, I went out to the local range to do some clay shooting. Some may cringe at the thought of using a 18in barrel to shoot skeet and I got some weird looks at the range, but it's all I have.

About halfway through the day, I noticed that the receiver was damaged near the ejection port. I have no idea what caused this damage, and I've never seen anything like it.

Any thoughts as to what might have caused this? What should I do now?

Thanks,

I have never seen that, and I have a 590, older version with 20" barrel, lots of rounds through it. I also get strange looks shooting skeet or trap with my gun. What the purists fail to realize is that yes, it's usually the only gun we have, and it's also fun to shoot things that move! So keep it up.

I would suggest you get in touch with John Grech, in Mount Forest (Grech Outdoors), he is the Mossberg warranty center in Ontario, maybe he has some insight.

Yikes! That's an odd damage, looks like that missing chunk blew out. Yeah, I only own a Mossy 590A1 20" shotty and shoot trap with it. So far nobody's given me grief at my range but I'd like to own a nice shotty for trap eventually. :)

are you the original owner of that gun?
I have seen that before, out of battery fireing, case and bits of the gun will blow out the bottom.
Ive had this happen to me on 1 870 and 2 Mossberg.
Remington was fine needed new exstractor and shell lifter, the Mossberg was toast, and so was my arm.
Not one of my best moments in shooting.

Ive used a 14" barrel for trap and really dont care what people think, as for the shotgun I would just call Mossberg.

Would you say in your opinion that the Remington is a tougher gun?? I thought a mossberg would be able to contain a failure like that well since the bolt locks into the barrel.

the 870 bolt locks to the barrel the same way as a 590. But the 870 has a steel receiver vs the aluminum receiver of a 590.

Yeah, good point. I was thinking the receiver doesn't take much stress, but if it fires out of battery, then the receiver will take some stress.

OK,

I agree that you should contact the Canadian Representative about your Mossberg's condition. I have two Mossbergs and a Remington 870 Wingmaster and I trust all of them (I reload slugs and shot shells). I feel that if you had an out-of-battery firing (which usually is impossible due to the disconnecter), you would have experienced far more damage to the weapon and yourself. I have heard of (but never experienced, praise the Lord above) slam-fires in M1 Garands and M1As (M14 variant) due to high primers or out of specification ammunition. I always made sure the primers were below the case-head before taking them out to fire in either of my weapons (and I reload these also). The AR15 and the AR10 variants in all of their chamberings now offered, are still made of aluminum alloy that doesn't see to get anyone excited (and now the AR15 is being offered in carbon fiber to reduce weight).

I am glad you are uninjured and that only the Mossy sustained some damage. Something definitely happened to the Mossy but (?) couldn't say without more information about the ammunition (IMHOO).

Keep us informed. please.

I ran my own tests. There is not any chance that the shotgun could have fired out of battery. No way, no how. I've no idea how it was damaged. Hopefully, it won't take the rest of time for Mossberg to send me a new firearm/receiver.

I've already started looking at new shotguns. Probably a Mossberg 590A1 with a 20" barrel. If/when this shotgun is ever fixed, I'll keep it as a truck gun.

That's the problem. The Mossberg is perfect for my budget. I love the controls and the feel of it. The ball is in Mossberg's court. If they replace the gun/part and provide good customer service, I'll be back. If not? Time to look for a new brand.

Well, I've waited a month now. No response from Mossberg, and very little communication from Grech Outdoors. I've got to say, I am very disappointed in the customer service Mossberg provides in Canada. It's almost as if they don't respect us as a legitimate market, which is unfortunate.

Looks like I'll be buying a Fabarm SDASS, and a folding stock for the 590A1. Time to retire it as a truck gun.
