Whats your thoughts on this shotgun, make, model, function ? for a home defence or SHTF! ? You got your Rem 870's, Win 1200 & 1300, and all the others! What's your pick? This shotgun is off the shelf, no mods!

Built like a tank, seems to have an extra one rd capacity vs others for a given barrel length, bonus if threaded for chokes.

Three things.

It’s a 590, not 591.
You should post in the shotgun forum for best results , not the precision rifle.
It’s a good, heavy, reliable shotgun. There has been spotty QC issues in the newer models some CGNers have noticed. Otherwise, it’s a proven shotgun.

I had the 590A1 SPX. Sold it to upgrade something else and I have missed it ever since. Heavy, rock solid gun that I put a few thousand rounds through.

Your right on all three counts! My bad! Thanks for your input!

There are a number of different models of the 590A1....some have ghost rings, some have different stock, some have different barrel lengths. All of them are solid fighting shotguns.

My personal suggestions are these:

#1. Ghost ring sights are good if you like that kinda thing. If not, a bead sight isn't terrible.

#2. It's a good thing to have a plan for putting a light on the gun.

#3. Given the location of the tang safety on a Mossberg shotgun, I find that a pistol grip is a poor ergonomic choice. I prefer a conventional stock, or one of the Magpul stocks on a Mossberg.

Other than that, it's VERY hard to go wrong with a 590A1.

I concur about the stock. My first exposure to the 590’s was a friends with a pistol grip. It didn’t make sense ergonomically speaking.
I just put a Magpul stock on mine this week actually and what a difference it makes. No more awkward wrist angles.

Nice to know! That it makes a diff!

My favorite pump shotgun hands down. Newer 870s have been unreliable for me. A 590A1 with magpul SGA stock, S&J safety, BFG VCAS and your preference of sights and light. For an extra cushy upgrade the Magpul remington recoil pad adapter with a limbsaver airtech recoil pad on the SGA is well worth the money. It's like air ride for your shotgun. That being said even out of the box they're great. The buttstock doesn't fit me well but it is serviceable.

I have a 590A1 and it is bullet proof. I shot it in 3 Gun for a number of years before buying a Versa Max. I doubt that I would ever sell my 590A1 as it is one of my favorites.

110% on the 590. I trained with one and trust it for the above mentioned reasons. Reliable, functional and no nonsense.

I prefer the safety above the frame over the push bolt. As well the USMC torture tested this model with great results. Topped others in the pump category. Should say something ...
