Mossberg 590A1

Hi There,

I just bought Mossberg 590A1 shotgun with heavy barrel and stuff. I just wondering any thoughts or reviews on this shotgun. This one is tactical and I will mostly be using it for target practice and bear defense.

If you carry it in the woods for bear defense you bought the wrong gun.

The 8+1 capacity is GREAT for 3 gun matches and is what I use but would be illegal for hunting.
Oh and I am moving this to a shotgun area.
 
I have a Mossberg 590A1 with the standard ghost ring sights. After a few hundred rounds through mine I am thoroughly impressed with it. It feeds flawlessly and hasn't been picky on ammo, it eats it all up.

When I first bought it I had very little experience with shotguns but I was surprised on my first trip to the range with it at how fast I could shoot and cycle it all the while hitting my targets. It's not that I was trying to race the clock or anything, it just occurred naturally. I don't know if you got the ghost ring or not but I find target acquisition is amazingly fast and accurate all the way out to 50 yards with slugs.

The only bad thing I have to say about it is that I find the length of pull (LOP) a little long for me but that can be easily fixed. Other than that the 590 is a great gun. I have yet to find another tactical shotgun that offers as much for the price, great value! Get out and enjoy it, I promise you you won't regret it.
 
I just ordered one this afternoon from Frontier (my first"black" gun:p) & hoping they are pretty decent. From the reviews I read & watched they seem to be. Congrats & hope you enjoy.

I have a Mossy 590A1 that I have taken to the range in -25C and it has performed as required. In fact of the four models of shotty out there, it and the 1917 Trench Gun were the only two that were ready to go.

I was useing it to shot clays made it easy... not a bad gun for the price its heavy though... meaning if you plan on packing it not worth it..
 
I dont want to flame anybody here but...Im a little tired of reading that the 590a1 is heavy.

Heavy compared to what? your pistol?

A regular 590a1 20"bbl with ghost ring sights weighs 7,25 lbs approx. 8,25 loaded.

thats a 1/4 of a pound lighter than a 500 with same barrel length !!

It weighs the same as a AR with a 20" bbl

But if you compare it your 6,5lbs Norinco Hp9 w/ 14" bbl.
yeah the A1s heavier! but not much..and it can hold twice the ammo!!

so you guys are complaining for 1,25 pound is that right?

my only grip is the length of pull. I wish i didn't have to extend my arm so much. No big deal, but that is the only negative i can think about the gun if you really had to twist my arm on the issue.

its a great gun. solid, can take a beating, and lots of customization options. I have a speedfeed stock and side saddle on it, and i have a heatsheild, high-vis follower and surefire flashlight foregrip on the way.

i just need tritium night sights now.
 
The Norinco is a heavy gun compared to a Remington. I don't have a weight but I bet if you compared the 20" 590A1 to a 12.5" Remy there would be a bigger difference. As well for bush carry a large amount of ammo isn't a plus, just weight. I doubt you find many bear encounters where the shooter had time to get off more than one or two rounds.

At the end of the day with a pack and kit in the bush those pounds do add up. I like the 590, I just think there's better kit out there for bear/bush carry.

I have a 590A1 in the 5+1 combo from Frontier as well and I found it to be a great shotgun so far with no issues.
 
I actually find 590A1a to be noticably lighter and less muzzle heavy compared to an 870 wearing a thick walled barrel and an extended mag tube with clamp.

Heck, even with just a 12.5" Dlask my 870 feels about right at par.

My only real knocks against the 590s are the typically cheapish Mossberg detailing and the rattlely, sloppy action, they cycle very positively and can even be made smooth with time, but they'll always be sloppy.

I believe the milspec 590A1 is built to loose tolerance. This way they will still function in conditions less than perfect. In no way does it reflect the quaility of the SG. Think AK47 sloppy.
I've owned both Remington and Mossberg "tactical" SG's and find the Mossberg 590/590A1 design & features fit my bill of requirements better.
 
I have had a couple of 590A1's and they are great, no complaints.

They are much easier to reload than other brands if you are into the games and the ghost ring sights stay on the gun.
 
Any loaded shotgun is a heavy item to pack if you are covering lots of ground. However as I have mentioned in a previous post in one of the many threads on evil bears, I now carry a 20" 590A1 for unexpected bruin encounters. Do'nt care about the percieved weight and I don't find the gun any heavier than any other shotgun. And contrary to an above post - it is a great bear defense gun as I have had experiences where there is plenty of time to get off way more than "one or two shots". Just my 2 cents
