Mossberg 715 feeding/extracting issue.

Hi All.

My mossberg 715 flat top has been mostly reliable, only maybe 10 jams per box of 555 white box. I have shot around 1500 rounds through it. I always spray it with bore/action cleaner run it with patches, but i have not disassembled it fully yet. The last time i shot it (using winchester white box, which i always use) It started to fail to fire/eject. What i found odd was upon inspection the rounds all had scraping marks on one side of them around the side of the actual bullet and a little on the top of the casing. My coworker said it is the winchester white box failing. I was wondering if the white box ammo could cause this, or if my firing pin/ejector may be bugged up? Thank you in advance.

Also my magazine is starting to not hold up the tips of the rounds like they did when new. Does this happen to every bodies mag over time? I thought this might be causing some feeding issues because the tip of the .22's are more flush with the lips of the mag rather then protruding up like new.

I had that exact ammo misfeed 23 times out of 25 in one mag just the other week.

The ammunition is pretty junky, try a box of Federal 525 bulk ammo or Blazer 40 grain lead round nose.

They feed awesome in my gun, I'd suggest CCI Mini-Mag as well but they seem near impossible to find right now.

Good to hear it's not just my gun /phew. . I will have to look into it. Have you done anything to mod your mossberg's reliability or just general tips?

I have about one round per mag that jams. It seems like the empty isn't being removed fast enough before the next round is fed. I am going to do some disassembly this weekend and see if I can address the issue.

Yes ammo. If you haven't aleady, buy about 5-8 different 50 round boxes of ammo and just see what your gun like and how it groups.
Mine grouped well with dynapoint but jammed a lot. I found American eagle 40g worked well but was also cheap. The match grade ammo grouped a little better but cost twice as much so I couldn't justify buying it in bulk.
AE 5000 40g at WWS. AWESOME!!!

I had the same problems your having.. try not resting the gun on the mag when shooting.. Any pressure on the mag was causing me to get about every fifth shot to jam

Same issue with federal and CCI mini mag :(. It refuses to extract, i have to rack it probably 50 times literally to MAYBE get an extraction, it shoots that ammo first strike though.. which is more than can be said for winchester. How can i diagnose an extractor? i do not know what they look like or how to tell if it is broken on a mossberg 715. If anyone has any tips they would be appreciated very much! Thanks in advance!

I recently did a couple of things that seem to have helped with the feed/eject problems. I bought four new magazines and pulled them all apart and filed the lower edges of the followers and the upper edge of the plastic just below where the metal tabs engage. I also used Frog Lube paste on all the pieces and I also completely stripped, cleaned and Frog Lubed the entire action and barrel. I have gone from three or four FTE/FTF per magazine to three FTE in 1000 rounds the last session of shooting. I also loaded the magazines and left them sit for a few days, not sure if that really did anything, but I would say I have pretty much solved most of my problems.

Just cleaned my mossberg 715. The problem is still going on, when i close the bolt bolt on a round, it does not close completely, there is maybe a quarter of the round visible. So then if i hit the bolt shut the round will fire but not extract. Then i have to get a cleaning rod to hit out the spent shell. I have noticed all the shells have a thin line of casing scraped off on the the same side everytime, i don't know what is causing this.

Try polishing in the reciever mine shot fine new but after a while the paint over spray in there gets hot and gummy started to jam etc got all the paint out and polished the bolt feed ramp now i rarley have probs shoots fine i use cci blazer ..stingers ..mini mags all good hopefully that works for u a pic would help to see where the rounds r scraping on thside..maybe lips of your mags r a bit goofy u can bend them with needle nose plyers aswell dont give up you will get it and they will work fine once the bugs r out like every other gun...cheers oh also the ejuctor is just stamped steel u can remove it by takin the small pin out and on a hard block with 2000 grit hold flat and give a little san it may have burrs on the sides that will affect its motion in the slot it lives and cause sticking......extractor i mean ...haha i find running it dry seems to help to not to much oil to attract muck

Thank you ^ :) will try this stuff out and get back in touch with you. i will try to also get some pictures... a picture is of course worth a thousand upset words!

Check all the rub marks on reciver and bolt and it will tell u were it contacts to smooth out those areas mine would catch at the rear of the extrator on the inside of the reciver so i sanded on flat surface the end of it wen installed in the bolt this may be your prob u will see the marks wen u take it apart.......

i was out to the range with a few range member he had a 715 tactical with handle and topped it off with a ncstar tactical scope
he put i don't know how many rounds down range was not hitting paper one bit after bore sighted. alot of feeding problems mis firing while using americian eagle. anyways looking threw the peep sights then the scope no where near close once got it on paper wouldn't hold zero and would not group at all any thoughts?

I have a flat top with a cheap tasco red dot it seems fine once i get it zeroed it stays there sounds like scope prob as for feeding do above and mags try not to hold the mags wen shooting it causes probs too i think my manual said not to rest or hold mags soo try those things out it sounds like alot but it worked for mine......cci seems the best for mine i tryed the odd different brand mixed in a couple mags and it would screw up right at those rounds but the cci were fine until it starts to get dirty..cheers
