So I got myself a Mossberg 930 after a lot of research into lower priced autoloaders. I started off this whole process thinking I was just gonna buy a Winchester SX3, but afer some car troubles and decideing to put some of my tax return into my RRSP's I decided a cheaper option would have to do.
The competition was as follows, Stoeger M2000, Weatherby SA-08($529), Remington 11/87($600). All had mixed reviews, but surprisingly most were good.
Stoeger was actually my first choice as a buddy(Chrisco) has one and likes it, but hearing some of the bad reviews as well as warranty service issues, and the fact it was a blowback design turned me off.
The Weatherby is some rebranded turkish gun, and I was concerned about parts availability, and service if it ever came to it.
Remington, well I simply hate Remington. I had issues with their service centre last year, and I have lost faith in them with the recent decline in their QC.
I ended up with the Mossberg for 5 reasons;
1) Reviews. Here and online.
2) Great deal. 2 barrel combo for $520!
Thanks Harrier 45 & Ellwood Epps.
3) It came with a deer barrel, and I could sell my Mossberg 500 barrels.
4) Fiber optic bead is a nice touch.
5) Comes with a kit to adjust the stock fit.
So here is a pic. This is just generic, but it is better than I can do.
I received it last week from Epps, and it was just what I expected. Not an SX3 but for all accounts a pretty nice gun. Fit and finish is what you would expect. Not superb, but nothing was loose, and there was no noticeable problems with the QC. I stripped it down which is super simple, and cleaned all the parts off, as they were covered in that same packing grease we all know and love. A light oil is all the manual calls for and actually specifies no heavy oiling or grease as this will simply lead to quicker fouling. That done it was put in to the safe till today.
So today I was off to the range despite getting hit with a few inches of snow, and the cold windy day. I had half a box of some 2 3/4 Winchester High Velocity steel shot, and a box of the cheap Winchester Universal target loads, that everyone claims don't function in semi auto's. I also purchased a box of Federal Top Gun target shells at the shop to shoot a round of trap with.
Anyway I went straight to the action range when I got to the range and went at her. I ran the 15 rounds of the Steel shot first without a hiccup, as I was expecting, as they are pretty stout for a 2 3/4 shell. The Universal was next and I was a little worried after hearing so many guys blame the ammo in a couple threads where higher priced semi auto's from some notable manufacturers would not function with it. Anyways I put 5 rounds of it through the gun without a failure, and I was off to the trap range.
On the trap range things got interesting, but not in a bad way so haters don't get excited. Now I will say I have shot quite a bit of trap, and I consider myself a decent shot, but I average 18 - 20's so no pro here. That said I shot the best round I have ever shot in my life with a 24. This with a gun I had put 20 rounds through before stepping onto the trap field. Needless to say I was impressed.
So my plan was now to head to the shop, and let the gun sit in the cold for awhile to see how it affected the cycling. I plan on using this thing for geese and ducks and want to know what to expect. So I am in the shop, and a buddy of mine who is also a member here(Heavy T) walks in with his brother(rufas). Long story short he is up for a few rounds, as is his brother so now we have a lot more test ammo to use. Thanks guys.
Back on the trap field we proceeded to put a box of the Federal Top gun, and 4 boxes of Winchester super target, which are a couple of the cheapest shells you can get, through the gun without a single issue. Not one jam, or ejection problem, and we were loading 2 and 3 at a time to test the function the entire time. I will also mention that the action, and porting combined with the light target loads made for some real soft shooting. Felt no worse than my 10 pounds Savage .223.
So long story short this gun is fantastic. 165 rounds 150 of which were some of the cheapest shells you can buy, and this gun didn't miss a beat. Heavy T was definitely impressed, and his brother rufas who was with him found a new sport that he is quite good at. He will probably be buying this same gun soon I am sure.
To anyone out there who is looking for a cheap semi auto, look no further than the Mossberg 930. This thing is a keeper, and is well worth considering.
Finish off with a couple pics from today. Notice the smile on Heavy T's face. It was his first time shooting trap.
