So I got myself a Mossberg 930 after a lot of research into lower priced autoloaders. I started off this whole process thinking I was just gonna buy a Winchester SX3, but afer some car troubles and decideing to put some of my tax return into my RRSP's I decided a cheaper option would have to do.

The competition was as follows, Stoeger M2000, Weatherby SA-08($529), Remington 11/87($600). All had mixed reviews, but surprisingly most were good.

Stoeger was actually my first choice as a buddy(Chrisco) has one and likes it, but hearing some of the bad reviews as well as warranty service issues, and the fact it was a blowback design turned me off.

The Weatherby is some rebranded turkish gun, and I was concerned about parts availability, and service if it ever came to it.

Remington, well I simply hate Remington. I had issues with their service centre last year, and I have lost faith in them with the recent decline in their QC.

I ended up with the Mossberg for 5 reasons;
1) Reviews. Here and online.
2) Great deal. 2 barrel combo for $520! Thanks Harrier 45 & Ellwood Epps.
3) It came with a deer barrel, and I could sell my Mossberg 500 barrels.
4) Fiber optic bead is a nice touch.
5) Comes with a kit to adjust the stock fit.

So here is a pic. This is just generic, but it is better than I can do.

I received it last week from Epps, and it was just what I expected. Not an SX3 but for all accounts a pretty nice gun. Fit and finish is what you would expect. Not superb, but nothing was loose, and there was no noticeable problems with the QC. I stripped it down which is super simple, and cleaned all the parts off, as they were covered in that same packing grease we all know and love. A light oil is all the manual calls for and actually specifies no heavy oiling or grease as this will simply lead to quicker fouling. That done it was put in to the safe till today.

So today I was off to the range despite getting hit with a few inches of snow, and the cold windy day. I had half a box of some 2 3/4 Winchester High Velocity steel shot, and a box of the cheap Winchester Universal target loads, that everyone claims don't function in semi auto's. I also purchased a box of Federal Top Gun target shells at the shop to shoot a round of trap with.

Anyway I went straight to the action range when I got to the range and went at her. I ran the 15 rounds of the Steel shot first without a hiccup, as I was expecting, as they are pretty stout for a 2 3/4 shell. The Universal was next and I was a little worried after hearing so many guys blame the ammo in a couple threads where higher priced semi auto's from some notable manufacturers would not function with it. Anyways I put 5 rounds of it through the gun without a failure, and I was off to the trap range.

On the trap range things got interesting, but not in a bad way so haters don't get excited. Now I will say I have shot quite a bit of trap, and I consider myself a decent shot, but I average 18 - 20's so no pro here. That said I shot the best round I have ever shot in my life with a 24. This with a gun I had put 20 rounds through before stepping onto the trap field. Needless to say I was impressed.

So my plan was now to head to the shop, and let the gun sit in the cold for awhile to see how it affected the cycling. I plan on using this thing for geese and ducks and want to know what to expect. So I am in the shop, and a buddy of mine who is also a member here(Heavy T) walks in with his brother(rufas). Long story short he is up for a few rounds, as is his brother so now we have a lot more test ammo to use. Thanks guys.

Back on the trap field we proceeded to put a box of the Federal Top gun, and 4 boxes of Winchester super target, which are a couple of the cheapest shells you can get, through the gun without a single issue. Not one jam, or ejection problem, and we were loading 2 and 3 at a time to test the function the entire time. I will also mention that the action, and porting combined with the light target loads made for some real soft shooting. Felt no worse than my 10 pounds Savage .223.

So long story short this gun is fantastic. 165 rounds 150 of which were some of the cheapest shells you can buy, and this gun didn't miss a beat. Heavy T was definitely impressed, and his brother rufas who was with him found a new sport that he is quite good at. He will probably be buying this same gun soon I am sure.

To anyone out there who is looking for a cheap semi auto, look no further than the Mossberg 930. This thing is a keeper, and is well worth considering.

Finish off with a couple pics from today. Notice the smile on Heavy T's face. It was his first time shooting trap.

I'm still waiting for the 930 SPX...but apparently last year Mossberg had no interest in exporting them to Canada.

I know the mag would be neutered, hopefully there will still be a mechanism to work on an extension tube for when I bring it south.

Congrats! Majority of the reviews I have read so far indicate the 930 to be a good "all round" semi-auto design in that price range.

I take it you haven't had an opportunity to test that rifled barrel yet? How is the build quality of the iron sights installed on that?

No I haven't fired the deer barrel yet, but I had one for my 500.

The sights are exactly the same as were on the 500 at least at first glance. They are made by Wiilliams I believe, and are not bad. That said I plan on replacing them with some William's Fire Sights before the hunting season.

I do have a few sabots from last year so I will have to give em a try and see how she groups. I will be sure to post a rant if it sucks. :D I was gonna wait to change the sights before taking it out, but I guess I can test to see how it groups assuming it's on paper at 50y. LOL

Turkeyslayer1300 I have actually read some really good reviews even using the deer barrel so I am interested where you heard that?

Congrats--I figured you would be impressed with the gun, especially for what you get for the price. As I said, my wife and I both have had a 930 for a few years now and no problems.

Is there room on the left side of the Gun for more Shells?

Nice write-up mlehtovaara, the Mossberg is a fine specimen with no disappointments.
It was great to meet a fellow CGN'r, share some gear and opinions.
I had not shot trap in probably 25 years, had a blast. Going to try out with my side-by next time.
Got me itch'n for nice semi 12 though.

A few of them got into Canada by Milarm, unfortunately, that door has long since been closed.

No idea why they are not bringing these into Canada anymore and no idea why they were able to leak a few across the border before...

Here is mine prepped with S&J Goodies:

P1010332.jpg

P1010331.jpg

S&J blocked +2 extension (works great, but doesn't seem to like the no jam follower)
S&J Jumbo charging handle (monumentally better than the stock one, easier to grab onto and doesn't dig into the hand)
S&J Jumbo safety (Again, if there are two things this shotty needs, charging handle and safety upgrades. This one is top notch and easy to work even with gloves)
S&J Railed barrel/mag clamp

On deck for purchase:
S&J Elastic shell carrier
S&J Railed forend (as soon as they come out!)

I use it primarily for 3 gun.

I had to put a few full power magnum slugs into it before it would shoot the trap loads reliably. Ever since the break in, it's been perfect.

I've pretty much silenced the need for a Benelli now.

I heard it from a few places and witnessed it first hand, it was not specific to the 930 though. Some Mossberg Slug guns had slightly oversized barrels, which were perfectly safe to use but yielded relatively poor accuracy with plastic sabots. The one I had shot Challengers well though. I am sure that Mossberg has since corrected it's oversight.

Yeah, that smile was on my face the whole time. Thanks a lot for asking us to join you mlehtovaara, we had a great time, and my bro was busting my balls for the rest of the day for kicking my ass! That Mossy is a solid SG

Great review I have one on order from cabelas with wood stock for $490. Did you go to silverdale gun club?
